SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,041, dated January 6, 1903.

Be it known that we, LAFAYETTE A. WILL- BANKS and WILLIAM C. ALLEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Buford, in the county of Gwinnett. and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the followingis' a specification.
This invention relates to that class of plows which are provided with detachable points; and it has for its object to provide a plow of this class in which the point may be easily and quickly removed and replaced without the use of pins or bolts passing through the same, in which a smooth meeting edge between the point and the moldboard shall be provided, and which shall possesssuperior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efi'iciency.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the lower end of a plow stock or standard to which the moldboard and point have been attached in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 isa vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the several parts constituting the invention separated or detached from each other.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated by like characters of reference.
The stock or standard carrying the plow in the class of devices to which our invention belongs is usually provided with a vertical slot to receive the connecting bolts upon which the point and moldboard are mounted. In our improved device the said stock or standard is formed of a single iron rod bent to a U shape, as will be seen clearly in Fig.
3, so as to form two independent sidepieces 1 1, connected attheir lower ends by the bend 2. The space between the said side pieces forms a slot 3, in which near the lower end of the stock or standard is pivoted a lever 4, the pivotal pin 5 of said lever having its bearings in the side pieces 1. rection of their length to conform to the usual curved shape of the point and moldboard which are to be attached thereto. The lever 4 is adapted to fit between the side pieces 1 1, and it is provided at its lower end with a bulged portion 6 and witha beveled tooth or projection 7, the object of which will be presently understood.
8 designates the plow -point, which is of conventional shape and which is provided on its under side near its upper edge with a lug or projection 9, having a transverse recess or perforation 10, adapted to be engaged by the beveled point of the lever 4. The log or projection 9 has been shownin the accompanying drawings as consisting of a tubular nipple, screw-threaded at its inner end to engage a screw-threaded pin 11, secured to the plow-point; but this particular mode of construction need not be carried out. The lug 9 may be solid, except for the recess or perfo ration 10, which is engaged by the beveled point 7, and it may be made integral with the plow-point, or it may be attached thereto in any suitable manner.
12 designates the moldboard, the lower edge of which, 13, is adapted to abut against the upper edge 14 of the plow-point. The moldboard, as well as the point, may be of any suitable shape, and it is provided near its upper edge with a countersunk perforation 15, adapted to receive a bolt 16, which extends through a plate 17, which may be circularin shape, as shown in the drawings, and which rests against the rear side of the plow-stock. The plate 17 is provided at its upper edge with an arm 18, extending forwardly between the side pieces 1 l of the stock and provided at its front end with a T-shaped clamp 19, hearing against the front sides of the pieces 1 1 and against the upper edge of the moldboard. It will thus beseen that by tightening the nut 20 upon the bolt 16 this single bolt will secure the moldboard in position with a great degree of solidity, the contacting edges of the T-shaped flange 19 and tho moldboard preventing lateral vibration -or play of the latter.
The plate 17 is provided near its lower edge with a screw threaded perforation 21, in
which is mounted a set-screw 22, adapted to press or bear against the upper end of thelever 4: when the latter is in operative position, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When it shall be desired to remove the plow-point, this may be effected by first loosening the setscrew 22, then the nut 20 upon the bolt 15, after which the latter, with the plate 17 and the moldboard 15, may be moved or slid in an upward direction until the upper end of the lever 4 may be swung in a rearward direction to the position indicated in Fig. 3, when the plow-point may be detached by simply disengaging it from the bevel-tooth 7. Reversely, to attach the plow-point it is engaged with the lever 4 by inserting the beveled tooth 7 into the recess 10 and then restoring the lever to its position between the side pieces 1 1 of the stock. The lug or projection 9 will be adapted to fit neatly in the U-shaped bend or portion between the lower ends of the side pieces 1 1, and the point is furthermore made secure by sliding the moldboard down against it until the meeting edges of the point and moldboard abut closely against each other. The nut 20 is now tightened upon the bolt 16, thus securing the moldboard and the plate 17 in the desired position. Finally, by tightening the set-screw 22 the upper end of the lever4 is forced in an inward direction between the side pieces 1 l, and the lower pointed end of said lever will thus tighten the point 8 very securely in its relation to the plow-stock.
It will thus be seen that we have achieved a device of extreme simplicity as regards its construction and operation and by the use of which the related parts of the plow will not only be held with a great degree of security in their relative positions with regard to the plow-stock by means of a single bolt and a single set-screw, but that furthermore the component parts of the device may very readily be separated for the purposes of repairing the same or when necessary for the substitution of new parts.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A device of the class described comprising a plow-stock, a lever having pivotal connection therewith, a detachable point having a recessed lug adapted to be engaged by said lever, and means for securing the latter in position, substantially as set forth.
2. A device of the class described comprising a plow-stock, a lever pivoted between the sides thereof and having a bulged portion and a beveled point or projection, a detachable point having a recessed lug adapted to be engaged by the beveled projection of the lever,
a moldboard supported upon the stock and having its lower end additionally supported upon the bulged portion of the lever, and means for pressing the upper end of thelatter forwardly. between the side members of the stock and thus securing it, substantially as set forth.
3. A device of the class described comprising a slotted plow-stock, a lever mounted pivotally between the side members thereof, a plowpoint engaging the lower end of said lever and held thereby in contact with the lower end of the plow-stock, a moldboard fitting against the front side of the latter and having its lower edge abutted against the upper edge of the plow-point, means for securing the moldboard to the plow-stock, and means for pressing the upper end of the lever forwardly between the side members of said stock, substantially as set forth.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a slotted plow-stock, a moldboard, a plate arranged against the rear side of the plow-stock and having a forwardly-extending arm, extending between the side members of said stock and provided with a bracket bearing against the upper edge of the moldboard, and a single bolt connecting the latter with the fastening-plate, substantially as set forth.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of the slotted plow-stock, a moldboard, a plate arranged against the rear side of the plow-stock and having an arm extending between the side members of said stock and provided with a bracket bearing against the upper edge of the moldboard, connecting means between the latter and the plate abutting against the rear side of the stock, and a plow-point having its upper edge abutting against the lower edge of the moldboard, subst-antially as set forth.
6. A device of the class described comprising a slotted plow-stock, a lever pivoted between the sides thereof, a plow-point having a recessed projection adapted to be engaged by the lower end of the lever, a moldboard abutted at its lower edge against the upper edge of the point, a plate bearing against the rear side of the plow-stock, fastening means connecting said plate with the moldboard, and means carried by the said plate for forcing the upper end of the lever forwardly between the side members of the stock, substantially as set forth.
7. A device of the class described comprising a slotted plow-stock, a lever pivoted between the side members of the same, a plowpoint having a recessed projection engaging the lower end of said lever detachably, a moldboard having its lower edge abutted against the upper edge of the point, a plate bearing against the rear side of the stock and having a forwardly-extending arm provided with a bracket bearing against the upper edge of the IIO moldboard, connecting means between the I our own we have hereto aflixed our signatures latter and said plate, and means carried by in the presence of two witnesses.
