Description
Patented Dec. 30, I902.
E. n. CUNDELL.
PORTABLE FIRE SHIELD.
(Application filed May 10, 1902.)
UNTTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD D. CUNDELL, OF PATERSON, NEWV JERSEY.
PORTABLE HRH-SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION formingpart Of Letters Patent No. 717,173, dated. December 30, 1902.
Application filed May 10, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. OUNDELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofPatersou, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fire- Shields, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a shield of asbestos fabric or other fireproof material which can be transported from place to place and readily attached on the side of a building.
My object is to prevent the spread of fires in thickly-populated districts by raising the fire-shield on the side of a house adjoining the one that is on fire and prevent it from being ignited.
My special object is to provide a portable appliance which can be readily transported from place to place by the fire-department or salvage corps, easily and speedily erected on the side of any building, and positively preventing the spread of flames into the adjoining house where the shield is applied, which will be more fully explained by the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 represents an end elevation of fireshield mounted on supports ready to be spread over the side of a building. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same, part in section. Fig. 3 rep resents an end elevationof the fire-shield placed between two buildings and spread over the side of the one to be protected from the flames from the other. Fig. 4 represents an end elevation of the fire-shield as applied to a factory building.
A and B are the shields, made of asbestos or other flexible fireproof material, rolled around a mandrel or bar 0 in double fold. The ends of mandrel G are provided with journal ends a and b, mounted in bearings c, which are attached to the supporting-legs d and f by the swinging block g. The said supports d and f are pivotally attached to block g, so they can be folded together for transportation and held in the extended position by the stay-hook e.
In applying the fire-shields A and B to a building the said shield, which has been previously rolled upon mandrel O, is carried in position between the buildings and mounted Serial No. 106,847. (No model.)
on the supports 01 and f, which are stayed by the guy-ropes h, which securely hold the supports in a vertical position, with the roll of fire-shield mounted on top of same. The shield A is then raised up on the side of the building over the roof, as shown in Fig. 3, andsecured by the stay-linep in any suitable manner. At the same time that the shield Aisbeing raised the shield B will be unwound and lowered toward the ground and secured by the line S to stake or any other suitable object. The cap of the bearing a is hinged on one side at u and provided with adjusting-bolt t and cam-lever 7a, to which the cord to is attached, and any amount of friction desired to check the rapid unwinding of the roll may be obtainedm .When all danger from the fire is over, the fire-shields A and B can be rolled up on mandrel Oby the hand-chain m, operating the sprocket-wheel roll of fire-shields can be lowered, the bearings c, with supports d and f, removed from the mandrel-journals a and b, and folded up, when all is ready for transportation to an- In some instances, especially on factory buildings, it is desirable to have the fireshields permanently attached to the building. This I accomplish by mounting the roll of fireshield and mandrel O in fixed bracket-bearings F, attached to the outside of building, as shown in Fig. 4, which is operated in the same manner as described for the portable appliance.
When rolled up and not in use, I provide a flexible cover E to protect the fire-shield from the weather. This cover E will lie up against the building when the shield A is drawn up to the roof of building and readily replaced in position when the shield is again rolled up.
Thus it will be seen I have a practical device which will be a sure preventive of the spreading of fires from one building to another and prevent disastrous confiagrations.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. Aportable fire-shield of asbestos or other fireproof material, rolled upon a mandrel in two parts, said roll mounted on pivoted supother point when desired.
D on one end of the mandrel 0. Then the ports, one part to extend above the roof of transportation, substantially as and for the lo the building, the other part to extend to the purpose specified. ground to protect the building from fire, sub- Signed at New York, in the county of New stantially as and for the purpose specified. York and State of New York, this 8th day of 2. Aportable fire-shield of asbestos orother May, A. D. 1902. fireproof material, rolled upon a mandrel and i EDWARD D.
