Description

Patented lune-IO, |902'. C. B. MCCULLUUGH.
FOL-oms CRATE.
Application filed Mar. 2B, 1902.)

UNITED STATES I CHARLES R. MCCULLOUGH,
PATENT OFFICE. v
OF LOOP, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING CRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 702,237, dated June 10, 1902.
Application filed March 28,1902.
To a/ZZ whom, t may oon/067%:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs R. McCUL- LOUGH, a citizen ofV the United States of America, residingr at Loop, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Crates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding shippingcrates, and has for its .object the provision of novel means whereby the crate may be compactly folded into a comparatively small space and the parts securely locked together both when the crate is built up and in a knocked-down position. l
My invention further aims. to provide. a crate of the above-described character that may be easily built up and readily knocked down when desired.
Astill further object of the present invention is to provide a crate of the above-described character that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention nally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of paris to be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail-reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specificatiomand where; in like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which-V` Figure 1 is a perspective .view of my fold` ing crate, showing the same in a built-up pO-M sition. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the crate in a knocked-down position. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View of the upper corner of the box when in a built-up position. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view'otl the end ofthe crate, showing a section of the lid or cover. Fig. 5 is a detail view of aportion of the lid, showing the means for supporting the ends of the box when-in a built-up position. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of Fig. 2.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents the base, having inclined ends 2,` forming a rectangular casing. The front side Serial No. 100,424. (No model.)
3 of the crate is hinged at 44 4 in metallic straps, a central strap 5 encircling the entire crate and giving strength and rigidity thereto. `The metallic straps 6 6, as well .as-the central strap 5, extend upwardly and carry hinges 7, 7, and 8, to which is secured the section of the cover or lid 9. The metallic strap 5 carries a staple 10, to receive the hasp 11, of the strap 5, which likewise has formed on its opposite upper end a hinge l2, to which is secured the other section or half 14 of the lid or cover. ,v The straps G 6 also carry inwardlyextending apertured lugs l5, extending over the`uppe'r end oftheside 3,and an opening 16 is also formed in the straps 6 to receive the threaded bolts 17, which are provided with securing-nuts 18. The straps 6 extend over the section 9 of the lid or cover and are bent downwardly, as shown at 19, and thence inwardly, as shown at 20, having an opening formed in the portion 20. A corresponding strap 6a of the section of the cover 14 has also formed therein an opening to receive a rod 21, which is screw-threaded atits upperend and carries at its lower end a 4hooked portion 22,said rod extending through the staple 23, attachedfto the ends 24, which are hinged at 25 in the lower portion of the casing and fold inwardly. the rod 2l extends to the openings formed in the straps 6 and 6 and is provided with a securing-nut 26, and the lower hooked portion 22`is secured in a yoke 27, which is rigidly secured to the beveled sides 2. This yoke` 27 .is also provided with hinged handles 28. "The rear side 29 of thecrate is secured in va like manner as the front side 3, and the opposite end of the crate is also constructed in a like manner as the end heretofore particularly described.
The under face of the section 14 of the lid or cover is provided with st aples30, and when in a knocked-down position the rod 21, carrying the hooked portion 22, `is secured thereto, as shown in Fig. 2, which serves to lock the sections of the lid securely together.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may The upper end of l IOO be made in the details ot' construction Without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a folding crate, the combination of a base, hinged sides and ends, a lid or cover formed in tWo sections hinged to said sides, yokes secured to said base, handles attached to said yokes, rods carrying engaging ends connected to said yokes and extending through said lid or cover, substantially as described.
2. In a folding crate, the combination of a base, hinged sides and ends, a lid or cover formed in sections hinged to said sides, yokes attached to said base, rods carrying hooked ends engaging said yokes, lthe upper end of said rod extending through said lid or cover,
and means whereby said rods are locked inl CHARLES R. MCCULLOUGH.
