SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 701,686, dated June 3,1902.

Be it known that I, HORACE G. DAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Steubenville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings."
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in can-openers.
The invention has for its object the provision of novel means that will be extremely simple in construction,'strong, durable,'and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture; furthermore, to construct a device that may be easily manipulated.
The invention, briefly described, consists of a flexible handle having arranged therein,
a clamp, and to said handle is pivotally secureda tool carrying at one end a cutting edge or knife and at the other end a canopener having slidingly secured thereon an adjustable cutter.
The invention further consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.

forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which" Figurel is a top plan view of'my improved j can-opener, showing in dotted lines the position of the parts when reversed. Fig. 2 is an underneath plan view showing the other side of the device. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing it in the reverse position. Fig. 5 is an'enlarged detail perspective view of the spring-clamp carrying the prongs.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the flexible handle, which is formed of a single piece of metal in the shape of a yoke. A spring-clamp 2 is riveted at 3 to said handle, said spring-clamp being bent downwardly'at right angles,-as shown at 4, forming prongs 5 5, extending through said handle.
The reference-numeral 6 indicates the body portion of the todhwhich is pivotally connected at 7 to the extending ends of the handle 1, said tool carrying a can-opener 8 on its forward end. The reference-numeral 9 indicates a sliding sleeve secured thereon, said sleeve carrying a cutter 10, which is formed integral therewith. Upon the other side of the body portion of the tool 6 is formed acuttingedge or knife 11. The opposite end of the body portion of the tool 6 carries a pointed end or barb 12 and a shoulder 14:, the latter serving to limit the movement of the sliding sleeve 9, carrying the cutter 10.
The manner of operating my improved canopener is as follows: In order to use the canopener, the device is placed in position as shown in full lines of Fig. lot the drawings. The point or barb 12 is centrally placed in the can and the sleeve 9, carrying the cutter, is adjusted to conform to the sides of the can when the same is cut and opened in the usual and well-known manner. When it is desired to use the tool asa knife or in case it is desired to protect the pointed end or barb 12, the tool is reversed, the body portion of the tool'turning upon the'axis of the-pivotal connection 7 and the can-opener extending into and between the handle. When it is desired to retain the can-opener in an operative position,
it is only necessary to raise the spring-clamp carrying the prongs 5 from out of engagement therewith and swing the body portion of the tool on pivot 7, so as to bring the knife in a position within the handle so as to permit prongs 5 5 to straddle the knife and securely retain the same.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved combination tool will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings.
It'will be noted that various changes may be madein the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention. v
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desi re'to'secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a can-opener, I'a forim'ed jof one piece of metal bent to form a yoke, a tool comprising a body portion pivotally connected to said handle and having a portion thereof inolosed by said yoke, a spring-clamp carrying prongs for engagement with the sides of one end of said body portion of the tool carried by the handle, a can-opener carried by one end of said tool, aslidable cutter mounted on said tool, said tool adapted to be swung on its pivotal point whereby the can-opener may be inolosed by the handle and engaged by said prongs when in an inoperative position. to
