PATRICK E. MCGINTY, OF NEWVARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO \VILLIAM H. COLEMAN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
NAIL-HOLDER FOR HAMMERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,076, dated May 27, 1902. Application filed November 21,1901. Serial No. 83,086. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- Figure 1 is a side view of a hammer and a Be it known that I, PATRICK E. MCGINTY, nail-holding device or attachment secured a citizen of the United States, residing at Newthereto, representing a nail held in its proper ark, in the county of Essex and State of New position ready to be lightly driven into the 55 Jersey, have invented certain new and usewood by means of the hammer. Fig. 2 is an ful Improvements in Nail-Holders for Hamend view of the driving portion of the hammers; and I do hereby declare the following mer with a face view of the nail-holding dcto be afull, clear, and exact description of the vice or attachment embodying the principles inventiomsuch as will enable others skilled in of this invention. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal 6o the art to which it appertains to make and vertical seetionof the driving portion of the use the same, reference being had to the achammer, a portion of the handle to which said eompanying drawings, and to letters of 'refhead is attached, and the said nail-holding erence marked thereon, which form a part of attachment or device, the said view illustratthis specification. ing one manner of securing the said nail- I 5 This invention has reference to improveholding attachment or device in its operative ments in hammers; and the invention relates position. Fig. 4 is a face view, Fig. 5 a side more particularly to a novel construction of view, and Fig. 6 a rear view, of the nail-holdnail-holding attachment or device which is ing attachment or device in its detached p0 to be applied to the hammer of the ordinary sition from the hammer, the said views show- 20 construction now in use, the said attachment ing the said device on an enlarged scale. Fig. or device being made to receive the head of 7 is an end view of the driving-head of ahama nail and retaining it in the proper position mer and a nail-holding device or attachment for lightly driving the sharp or pointed end of a slightly-modified form of construction, of the nail into the wood before finally drivbut still embodying the principles of this in- 7 5 2 5 ing the nail entirely into the wood by means vention; and Fig. 8 is a longitudinal vertical of the driving-head of the hammer in the section of the said parts represented in said usual manner. Fig. 7, the said View also representing the The invention has for its principal objects said parts in their operative position on the to provideasimple and a cheaply-constructed end of the handle. o nail-holding attachment or device which can Similar characters of reference are embe readily applied to any known form and ployed in all of the said above described construction of hammer, the device or atviews to indicate corresponding parts. tachment having this special advantage that In the said drawings the reference chara nail can be held in the proper position prior acter 1 indicates the handle, and 2 the ham- 5 to driving the same home, and the hammer mer-head, the latter being provided with the and nail can both be manipulated at one time usual form of driving-shank 3 and an eye or and in such places where a carpenter cannot receiving member 4, in which the end 5 of use both hands, as heretofore, one hand for the handle is secured in the usual manner. holding the nail and the other hand for swing The said nail-holding device or attachment 0 o ing the hammer. I is indicated by the reference character 6, and
The said invention therefore consists in the it consists, essentially, of a main body or facenovel construction of nail-holding device or plate 7, which is made with an opening or attachment hereinafter more fully set forth; slot 8, extending from the one side of the said and, furthermore, this invention consists in face-plate to a point near the opposite side 5 5 the several novel arrangements and combinathereof, as illustrated more particularly in tions of the various parts, all of which will Figs. 2, 4, and 7 of the drawings. The said be described in detail in the accompanying slot or opening 8 is made much Wider at the specification and then finally embodied in the bottom of the said face-plate 7, the said enclauses of the claim. larged or wider portion, which is indicated by we 50 The invention is clearly illustrated in the the reference character 9, being formed by a accompanying drawings, in whichpair of shoulders 10, which when a nail 11isinserted in the slot or opening are fitted directly over the marginal edges of the head of the said nail, and thereby hold or retain the said nail in its proper position in the said device or attachment 6, as will be clearly understood. In order that the said nail 11 maybe more securely retained in its fixed position in the said slot or opening 8, the said slot or opening has its marginal edges 12 and 13 made to extend in a downward direction toward the lower edge 14: of the said faceplate 7, as shown, the said edges being arranged at dilferent angles, so that said edges,
if prolonged, would meet, whereby the entrance to said slot or opening 8 is much wider than the {end 15 of the said slot or opening and whereby when the nail is inserted the said end 15 will securely engage the body of the nail just below its head and will retain the said nail in a fixed position in alinement with the central longitudinal axis of the driving-shank 3 for driving the sharp end of the nail into the wood. After the nail has been fixed in the wood a movement of the hammer in a lateral direction will disengage the said holding device or attachment 6 from the nail.
To securely fix the said nail-holding device or attachment in its operative position to the hammer-head 2, the means illustrated more particularly in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, is preferably employed. This means consists, essentially, of arearwardly-extending portion or member 16, which is provided with a forwardly-extending plate or holding-arm 17, as illustrated. This plate or arm 17 is of such thickness and width that it can be securely arranged against the inner surface of the eye or receiving member 4 of the hammer-head, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and when the end portion 5 of the handle is driven into said eye 4 then the said plate or arm 17 will be securely wedged in its operative position between the said end portion of the handle and a portion of the inner surface of the said eye 4, substantially as illustrated. Of course it will be understood that the said opening or slot 8 may be differently arranged in the said face-plate 7, and the complete nailholding device or attachment 6 may be secured at any side of the hammer-head, if desired.
Instead of providing the nail-holding device or attachment with the holding-arm or plate 17, the said arm or plate and the rearwardly-extending portion or member 16 may be dispensed with, in which case the said device is made as indicated in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings. In that case the said faceplate 7 is made with one or more perforations or holes 18, the eye portion of the hammerhead being provided with correspondinglyarranged holes or perforations 19, as illustrated in said Fig. 8, and in which can be arranged screws or pins 20 for securely fixing the said nail-holding device or attachment in its operative position.
From the above description of the present invention it will be obvious that a simply-constructed and efiicient device or attachment for the purposes stated has been produced which can be easily and quickly appplied in position on any well-known construction and form of hammer.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various parts of the device, as well as in the details of the construction thereof. Hence I do not limit this invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as described in the previous specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction thereof. I
