FREDERIC O. MATTESON, OF HOUSTON, KANSAS.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,066, dated May 27, 1902.
Application filed March 13,1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, FREDERIC O. MA'rTEsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Houston, in the county of Hodgeman and State of Kansas, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Wrenches; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my wrench, the movable jaw being shown as thrown to one side for change ofadjustment. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the wrench with movable jaw raised. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view illustrating the application of' the wrench to different sizes of pipe.
The invention relates to wrenches of the kind known as pipe-wrenches; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a, designates the main bar of thewrench, having a handle portion I) and an angularly-projecting jaw c at the end of the shank d. This shank is formed with broad sides, which are provided with transverse arc-shaped grooves e in series from the handle portion nearly to the jaw. These grooves are provided on both sides of said shank. The shank is longitudinally slotted, as indicated at g.
Engaging the sides of the shank d are the parallel shank branches h of the movable-jaw portion 7c, the end of which is provided with an angularly-projecting jaw Z. The shank branches h are about as long as the main-bar shank and jaw, the movable jaw being designed to close on the work beyond the main jaw. The shank branches h are provided with the arc-shaped lugs or projections m, which are adapted to engage the arc-shaped grooves c of the main shank when the mov-. able-jaw portion is turned into alinement with the main shank in position to engage the pipe or other work.
In the shank branches of the movable jaw are made perforations p, which are centered $erial No. 98,137. (No modeLl on the arc-shaped projections 'm, and through these perforations pass a short bolt 15, the threaded end of which is engaged by a thumbnut 02. By means of this bolt the movablejaw portion is connected to the shank of the main-jaw bar.
When the movable-jaw portion is turned back out of engagement position or so that it is at a wide angle with the main-bar shank, the arc shaped projections of its shank branches are turned out of the arc-shaped grooves of the main shank and said projections and grooves are disengaged from each other, so that the movable-jaw portion can be adjusted to engage the proper groove of the main-jaw shank to suit the diameter of the pipe on which the wrench is to be used.
WVhen the Wrench is in use, the strain is borne by the shanks through the engagement "of the lugs of the branch shanks with the grooves of the main shank. The angular jaws are usually made long enough to allow a single adjustment for two sizes of pipe.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A pipe-wrench, comprising a longitudinally-slotted main-jaw bar, having transverse projections, a branch-shank movable-j aw portion, having perforations, and a connecting bolt and nut, substantially as specified.
2. In a pipe-wrench, the combination with the arc-grooved and longitudinally-slotted main-j aw bar,of the branch-shanked movablejaw portion having arc-shaped projections, and the connecting bolt and nut, substantially as specified.
3. A pipe-wrench having its main bar longitudinally slotted, and provided with aseries of transverse arc-shaped slots, a branchshanked movablejaw portion having arcshaped projections, and perforations centered therein, and a connecting bolt and nut, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
F. O. MATTESON.
