UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS FERDINAND BECKER, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
BOAT OR VESSEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Eaten? N0. 700,011, dated May 13, 1902.
Application filed August 27, 1901. Serial No. 73,435. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULIUS FERDINAND BECKER, a citizen of the free and Hanseatic town of Hamburg, residing at Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Ships, Boats, or other Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in ships, boats, and other vessels, havingfor its object to prevent the swaying of the hull of such vessels.
In carrying out my invention I cause those forces which if the mast were fixed would cause the hull of the vessel to turn to act on a lever connected with a counterweight in such manner that the Weight will assume a position in Which'the disturbing forces are balanced, no matter Whether such forces act from within or without the hull of thevessel. The device may be so constructed that the lever on which the forces act and the counterweight are secured together, or intermediate mechanism of any suitable kind may be provided.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a cross-section, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of a vessel constructed in accordance with my invention.
As will be seen by reference to the drawings, the mast a is hinged to the vessel at a suitable place in its length and carries below the hinge b a toothed segment c,which meshes with a second toothed segment 6, mounted on a horizontal shaft d. Under about the middle of the vessel is hinged a lever Z, carrying a weight f. The hinge of this lever is provided with a-toothed segment c', which ongages with a corresponding toothed segment is at the end of the horizontal shaft (1.
The operation of this mechanism is as follows: The disturbing forces acting in the direction of the arrows shown in Fig. 1, which if the mast were fixed would cause the whole vessel to turn to the right, Fig. 1, will in the present case cause the mast alone to take an inclined position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and this movement of the mast will cause the lever Z, on whichthe Weight f is se cured, to likewise turn. The angle assumed by the lever Z will be such as to balance the forces acting on the mast, and the only efiect on the vessel will be a temporary deeper dip or draft. If the forces act in the opposite direction to that of the arrows shown in Fig. 1,- the mast will be inclined toward the opposite side of the ship, and the Weight will of course likewise be moved inithe opposite direction, in which manner a state of equilibrium will be maintained. I 7
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a ship, boat, or other vessel, the combination, of a hinged mast, a toothed segment rigidly secured to said mast below the hinge, a shaft, a second toothed segment, secured on said shaft and meshing with the segment secured to the mast, a third toothed segment, secured to said shaft, a-lever carrying a Weight, a fourth toothed segment, secured to said lever, substantially as, and for the purpose, set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set LEO TOLLES, V E. H. L. MUMMENHOFF.
