TIO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCEN:
Beit known that I, MOSES C. GOODALE, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful improvements in Combination'Belt-Cutters; and I do hereby `declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, referenccbcing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters oi' referencemarke'd thereon. 4 i v The nature of my invention relates to the combination of all the necessary implements or tools-requisite for making new belts or repairing them. I
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. I. I v
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of one side of my improved combination belt-cutter.
Figure 2 represents a sidc'elevation ofthe opposite side of thcsame. b
Similar letters in the different figures indicate corresponding parts.
a represents the knife-jaw, to which the knife b is secured.' To this jaw a also the projection c is cast. cZ, the punch-jaw presenting the cutter seat, to which the punch e is secured'in the usual way. Also to this jaw d the arm fis pivoted or hung at the fulcrurn gf Atvthe extreme end of the armf is the punch-seat L. In the jaw Z a slot or mortise is made for the reception of the armfand projection c. Thejaws a andcl cross each other, and are secured and work byla joint and screw, This screw z' forms a fulcrum for the handle j, which is a continuation of the jaw a. At the extreme end of this handle j is one jaw ofthe pliers 7c; also the handle Z is a continuation of the jaw d.' Near the extreme end of the handle Zis the other jaw m of the pliers, standing at about right angles with the handle Z. At the extreme end is the belt-awl n.
v Operation. The user, on taking this instrument lin hand, without being obliged in the usual way to take up each tool separately, as may be required, is enabled at once, and with dispatch, vto cut the belt straight and square, as
4 required, by means of the knife 6, makethe holes for lacing the same by aid of the punch c, then, if the holes are required to be made larger, asis often the case, the awl n is at hand andreadyto be applied for that purpose. Still holding the instrument, in drawing theV lacing through the holes, -he has the aid of the pliers to assist in this most laborious and diiiicult part, formed by the jaws 7c and m. This entire operation is performed, while being held in the hand, by contracting and relaxing the handles j and Z. I
4The value andusefulness of this instrument must be apparent, for, on every' extremity of the same, -thcre is a useful tool, combining and connecting in one all the tools that are required for this one purpose, and its entire wei ht, of the whole collectivel not exceedin the weicht of one se aratel Y g e P y What I claim asmy invention, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is- The armf, with its punch-seat @when arranged to operate substantially as described and fullyset forth. I also claimthe arrangement and construction of thc knife b, awl'n, and punch e`, in combination with the pliers k and m, all for the'purposes substantially as herein described.
