PATENT OFFI E.
GEORGE B. DONAVIN,
OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR COMBINED NIESS-CHESTS AND RANGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent-N0. 692,639, dated February 4, 1902.
Application filed May 20, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. DONAVIN, a
lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Looking Devices for a Combined Mess-Chest and Range, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of locking devices for combined mess-chests and ranges; and the objects of my invention are to provide an improved locking device whereby both the doors and the sliding range top plate or plates are locked against movement, to so construct and arrange the parts of my improved locking device as toprevent the employment of projections which might interbeing transported, and to produce other improvements in details of construction, which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved range, showing the lock-bar in use thereon. Fig. 2 is a detail View in perspective of said lock-bar, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section through one of the doors of the range.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 represents my improved range and messchest, which is preferably of the oblong form shown. On the forward side of the range I provide oven and fire-box doorways, which are adapted to be closed, respectively, by doors 2 and 3, said doors being hinged in their lower portions through the medium of laterally-projecting hinge-pins which extend within keeper-like hinge-plates, 4, arranged vertically on the forward face of the range, these hinge-plates being of such size as to permit of a vertical movement of the door-hinge pins therein. The upper portion of each of the doors 2 and 3 is, as indicated more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, provided with an inwardly and downwardly projecting hookbar 5, which when the door is elevated slightly is adapted to engage the upturned end portion of a catch-hook 6, which projects Serial Ila. 61,061. (No model.)
from the range at the upper side of the dooring at right angles therewith, said arm 8 ter minating in an inturned extension 8 which is parallel with the arm 8. The arm 8 is also provided on its upper side with a projecting stop-lug 8, while the inner end of the termination 8 is formed with an opening adapted to receive a padlock-yoke.
The doors of the combined mess-chest and range being closed and the top plate-sections 7 being in their inner or closed positions, the longer arm 8 ot' the locking-bar is inserted longitudinally through forwardly-projecting keepers 9, which are arranged on the forward face of the range at heights above the door tops. In this manner the longer arm 8 of said locking-bar is, as indicated more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, arranged immediately above and in position to contact with the shoulders formed by the inturned catch portions 5 of the doors, while the shorter arm S embraces a portion of the end of the range,
will be seen that its arm 8 will prevent a lifting of the doors 2 and 3, thus preventing the opening of the latter, while the lug 8 of the shorter arm will prevent the withdrawal or outward movement of the first removable top section 7.
It will thus be seen that a simple and reliable locking device is provided for that class of combined mess-chests and ranges which are provided with lifting outwardly-swinging doors and which are provided with the sliding top plate or plates.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a locking device for a combined messchest and range the combination with the range-body having side doorways, doors therefor hinged in their lower portions to permit vertical movement, inwardly-projecting angular catch-bars 5 on the upper portions of said doors and outwardly-projecting angular catches 6 on the body of the range and keepers 9 projecting from said range above the doorways, of an angular 1ockingbar 8 having one of its arms adapted to be inserted in said keepers and having its remaining arm provided with a lateral extension adapted to en ter an opening in the end of the range and means for securing said extensions from withdrawal, substantially as specified.
2. In a locking device for a combined messchest and range, the combination with the range-body having a sliding and removable top plate or plates, doorways on one side of the range, vertically-movable hinged doors for said doorways, angular catches as described projecting respectively from said doors and range-body and keepers 9 projecting from said range-body above said doors, of an angular locking-bar 8 having its shorter arm S provided with a lateral extension 8 and an upwardly-projecting lug 8, the longer arm 8 of said locking-bar adapted to be illserted in said keepers 9, the shorter arm 8" adapted to embrace a portion of the end of the range and its extension 8 adapted to enter an opening in the latter, substantially as specified.
GEORGE E. DONAVIN.
In presence of-- W. L. MoRRoW, JOHN W. 000mm.
