Description
' ion.
BENJ. HINKLEY, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
BEDS'IEAD.
To all ebiz-0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN HINKLEY, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful .improvement in the construction of bedsteads, and that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, references being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawing` Figure l, I have represented in perspective, an end and side rail, with a foot and upper part of a post attached thereto, and secured together by elastic spring bars, as secured to me by Letters Patent July fifth eighteen hundred and forty eight. Fig. 2, represents a section through the end rail, at the dotted line X X, of Fig. l.
A, Fig. l, represents the end rail of my improved bedstead, with the side rail B, foot C, and upper part of the post D, attached at one end; while these parts are detached from the other end, in order to show the construction thereof.
a, a, a, in Figs. l and 2, represent the mortises into which the tenons on the ends of the side rail, upper end ofthe foot, and the lower end of the upper part of the post is admitted.
E, E, represents the spring bars by which the frame is secured together by means of screws and nuts on the ends thereof. The
feet and upper part of the posts may be fastened to theJ rail A, by screw threads being cut on their tenons, and in the mortises o f the rail; or by any other practicable device.
In thus constructing my bedstead it is obvious that the posts may be readily removed, thereby rendering the frame free to be moved, without taking it apart. This construction Aof the frame, renders it firm of itself, and simple and easy of erection; and is made with much less expense of manufacture than that of the co-mmon bedstead.
Having thus fully described and represented my improved bedstead, I do not intend to limit myself to the fastening of the frame thereof by rods as described and represented, as this may be effected by right and left screw threads being cut on the tenons of the side rails, and other known devices, but
I/Vhat I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
The union of the side and end rails of a bedstead into a frame entirely independent of the posts, substantially in the manner and for the purpose as herein set forth.
BENJA.V HINKLEY.
I/Vitnesses E. L. BRUNDAGE,
G. V. CRAMER.
