ROVlNG-BREAKER FOR SPINNING-FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 697,018, dated April 8, 1902.

Be it known that LALONZO E. RHOADES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of IIopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in RovingBreakers for Spinning-Frames, of which the followingdescription, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of novel means for breaking or clamping the roving in a spinningframe to stop the delivery and the roving upon breakage of a thread between the front rolls and the spindle. Numerous devices have been constructed heretofore to accomplish the same general result; but so far as I am aware the clamping or breaking of the roving has been effected directly by or through breakage of the thread in front of the rolls.
In my present invention the stoppage of the roving delivery is effected by or through the accumulation thereof on the roll provided for that purpose below the front drawing-roll, the apparatus being very simple, efficient, and quickly responsive, the accumulation of roving oecnrrin g upon breakage of the thread.
Figure 1 is a part-sectional view from front to back of a portion of a spinning-frame with one embodiment of my invention applied thereto and shown in normal operative position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the novel means for effecting the stoppage of the roving delivery. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the roving breaker or clamp proper mounted on the traverse or roving bar; and Fig. 4: is a vertical section thereof on the line w w, 3.
Referring to Fig. 1, the stand D, drawing rolls (Z, top rolls (1, the traverse or' roving bar (1 guide-board a at, having the pig-tails a one of which is shown, may be and are of usual and well-known construction, and herein I replace the usual trumpets on the traverse-bar by guides, which form a part of the stopping mechanism.

front drawing-roll should the thread break between the drawing-rolls and the spindle and operatingin well-known manner, the said clearer-roll preventing the roving from winding onto the front drawing-roll and being herein shown as yieldingly supported in weighted arms b fulcrumed at I) on the stand D.
The traverse or roving bar (1 has mounted upon it the roving-breaker proper, it being understood that each roving will be provided with one of the breakers, and herein I have shown the breaker as composed of two members relatively movable, one of the members, as 0, being shown as trough-like secured to the back of the traverse-bar by screws 5, passed through a cover-plate c having an aperture or eye 0 therein for the roving to pass through. The other member-is shown as an elongated plate 0 adapted to slide longitudinallyin the trough-like member 0 and also provided with an aperture or eye 0, (see Fig. 4,) which normally registers with the aperture c and with an aperture 0 in the bot tom of the member 0 opposite the aperture 0.
The member 0 is shown as having an elongated slot 0 through which a pin 5 is passed, said pin extending through the cover-plate c into the bottom of the-trough-like memher 0 and limiting the longitudinal movement of the member 0 The latter member extends below the traverse bar, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and at its lower end it is connected with an arm f, fulcrumed on a stud f to swing laterally to accommodate the-back-and-forth movement of the traverse-bar, the stud f being rigidly mounted in a tipping lever L,-fulcrumed on a fixed stud 6 on a stand L rigidly secured to the spinning-frame adjacent the roll stand D.
The tipping lever is provided with forwardly-extended arms L, notched at 7, which formbearings for a roll L located beneath the clearer-roll B and normally held in contact therewith by the weight of the swinging arm The fulcrums 6 and fare shown in Fig. 1 as substantially at right angles to each other, so that while any tipping movement of the lever L will impart an up-and-down movement to the-arm fthe latter can swing laterally with the movement of the traverse-bar.
A screw-stud is passed loosely through a hole 0 in'the lower end of the member 0 and is screwed into the free end of the arm f to pivotally connect the said arm with the breaker member 0 So long as the members of the rovingbreaker are in normal position, as shown in the drawings, the'apertures or eyes 0 c 0 will register or be in alinement with each other and at such time will constitute a roving-guide, through which the roving is led to the drawing-rolls.
Should the thread break between the drawing-rolls and the spindle, the roving will wrap around the clearer-roll B in well-known manher, and as the roving thus accumulates it will act upon the roll LZ-depressing the lat ter to tip the lever L on its fulcrum and elevate the rear free end of the arm f. Thereby the breaker member 0 will be lifted, and the aperture 0 will be moved out of register with the apertures c 0 and the roving will be clamped and parted between the breaker and the back rolls in well-known manner,
and delivery of the roving is consequently I stopped, the end of the roving being held by the breaker. When the accumulated roving is removed from the clearer-roll, the tipping lever and its connected arm f will return to normalposition, and the member 0 of the roving-breaker will resume its normal posi-' 1101], and the roving end will be released.
By mounting the roving-breakers at the back of the traverse-bar the distance between them and the back rolls is sufficient to render easy the breakage of a roving when clamped by its cooperating breaker, as de- -scribed.-
My invention is not restricted to the precise construction and arrangement herein shown, as I have illustrated one practical embodiment thereof without attempting to show various changesor modifications which might be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 1 Patent, is
1. In a spinning-frame, drawing-rolls, a clearer-roll, to take up roving from the drawing-rolls upon breakage of the thread, and means actuated by or through accumulation of roving upon the clearer-roll to clamp and stop delivery of the roving.
2. In a spinning frame, drawing rolls, means to clear the front roll of roving upon tively movable members, the apertures normally registering and forminga roving-guide, and means, actuated by or through accumulation of roving upon breakage of the thread,
to effect relative movement of said apertured members andpart the roving.
4. In a spinning-frame, drawing-rolls, a clearer-roll cooperating with the front roll, a traverse-bar,means mounted thereon to clamp and stop delivery of the roving to said drawing-rolls, said means normally forming a roving-guide, andv actuating devices for the said means, operated by or through accumulation of roving upon the clearer-roll upon breakage of the thread.
5. In a spinning-frame, drawing-rolls, a clearer-roll cooperating with the front roll, a traverse-bar, fixed and movable cooperating members mounted thereon and apertured to normally form a rovinguide, movement of one of said members relatively to the other acting to clamp and stop delivery of the roving, and means, includinga rocking actuator moved by accumulation of roving upon the clearer-roll, pivotally connected with and to operate said movable member upon breakage of thethread.
6. In a spinning-frame, drawing-rolls, a clearer roll cooperating therewith, a traverse-bar, a roving-breaker mounted thereon and comprising fixed, and cooperating movable, plates, each having an aperture, the apertures normally registering and forming a roving-guide, and connections between the clearer-roll and the movable plate, said con nections including alever having a fixed fulcrum and adapted to be tipped by accumulation of roving on the clearer-roll, due to break age of the thread, and a laterally-swinging arm fulcrumed on the lever and connected with the movable plate, to operate it upon tipping of the lever, to thereby move the apertures in the cooperating plates out of register, to clamp and effect breakage of the roving.
