UNITED @raras Parent. @Fries ALEXANDER LUETI-II, OF LAKEMILLS, VISCONSIN.
SEPARABLE TROUSERS-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,908, dated April 1, 1902.
Application filed .Tuly 26, 1901. Serial No. 69,818. (No model) To @ZZ whom, it ntftg/ concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER LUETHI, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Lakemills, in the county of Jefferson and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Separable rlrousers-Button, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is the production of an improved separable button which shall be especially adapted on trousers or the like and which shall be so constructed that when the two distinct sections composing the same are adjusted tothe trousers they will be securely held in position and all possible tearing of the goods where they are applied reduced to a minimum.
Another object of my invention is to provide a button of the class described which shall be very simple and strong` in construction and which, if necessary, can be quickly removed or attached to anysuitable place on the trousers-band or the like.
With this end in view my invention consists in certain new and novel features in the construction of a button of the class described, of the combination of two sections, each of these sections being respectively provided with a half disk or head, one of these disks extending upward, the other extending downward, a neck or shank, a toothed clampplate, one of aforesaid clamp-plates being provided with a prong, the other provided with an aperture to receive said prong7 substantially as shown and described, and especially pointed out in the claims.
Now referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical and sectional view of my separable trousers-button on the line X X of Fig. 2, showing the button when it is locked and attached to the trousers band or goods. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed face views showing the two different sections of which my separable button is composed. Figs. 5 and 7 are perspective views of aforesaid sections. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of my separable button in open condition and'showing the position the two sections assume after inserting the prong of one of the clamp-plates through the trousers-band and aperture provided in the other clamp-plate.
All the above figures, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several Views, are drawn in `enlarged scale, so as to more plainly show their construction and combination.
In the drawings, A and A designate, respectively, upper and lower half disks or heads of similar size and shape, these half disks or heads being joined to their respective clamp-plates C and C' by reduced necks or Shanks B and B.
The clamp-plates C and C', which are in this instance modified rectangles, as shown, may assume the round, elliptical, or square form, as desired, or may be embossed or dlecorated in any suitable way with fanciful ornamentation. The letters cl and d indicate series of projecting teeth provided on the outer upright edges of the respective face and back of the clamp-plates C and C.
The clanip-plate C is provided at its lower end with a rectangular aperture or, the length of said aperture heilig sufficient to allow the prong b of clamp-plate C to be inserted through it after being pushed through the trousers-band m. (See Figs. 5, 6, and 7.) The prong b, projecting from the back of clamp-plate C', (see Fig. 5,) is bent downward atfto a suitable angle, so as to extend in a plane parallel to said clamp-plate, and also extends sufficiently :inward to allow the trousers-band m and clamp-plate O,after the prong has been inserted through them and the two sections are closed or locked, as shown in Fig. 1, to be tightly secured. As is distinctly shown in Fig. l, when the prong b bears against the under side o of the aperture dthe upper side of the neck B also bears on the under side of the neck or shank l5, and the two sections composing the button are tightly locked, thus allowing the series of teeth d and d', provided on the back and face sides of the respective clamp-plates, to engage in the trousers-band m and positively prevent any possible displacement or sidewise slipping of the button or its sections thereof.
By means of the described construction the sections of the button may be readily and firmly assembled. To separate the button, the upper and lower half disks or heads Aand A are, respectively, pressed and pulled apart IOO between the thumb and forefinger until the necks or shanks B and B of the two sections disengage. (See Fig. 6.)
Each section of my button is made of one solid piece of suitable metal and formed by any well-known means, and While I have shown and described but one example of the embodiment of my device I do not intend to confine its scope to the special form and shape I have adopted for the clamp-plates, but reserve the right to modify the form of the same to any Suitable shape, such as round, elliptical, or square, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
From the foregoing description it also Willr be seen that I have produced a separable button that differs, essentially, from all buttons of that class heretofore constructed; that the tearing or abrasion of the goods Where it is attached is reduced to a minimum; that it can be quickly and easily manipulated and attached or detached, as above specified.
I/Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. As an improved article of manufacture the herein-described separable trousers-button, consisting of the half-disksA and A; the necks or shan'ks B and B; the clamp-plates C and C', each of said clamp-plates being provided on the outer upright edges of its respective face and back with series of teeth d. and d'5 aforesaid clamp-plates also having respectively a rectangular aperture a and a prong b, the aperture ct being provided to receive the prong b of clamp-plate C', in substance as set forth.
2. A separable trousers-button, made up of two sections, one of said sections embracing the downward-extending halfdisk or head A', joined to the clamp-plate C by the neck or shank B', said clamp-plate having on the back and outer upright edges series of teeth/d, and an inwardly-.projecting prong b, bent atfto any suitable angle and extending downward in a plane parallel to the clamp-plate C'; and
the other section embracing the npward-ex- ALEXANDER LUIrni.
