To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR K. BEOKWITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Dowagiac, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in draft devices for heating-stoves.
The objects of the invention are,first, to provide a downdraft device which is conveniently and easily adjusted up and down in the stove; second, to provide a construction of downdraft tube which is conveniently adjusted by use of the poker ordinarily provided with such stoves; third, to provide in connection with such a device a convenient damper for opening and closing the same.
Further objects will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in this specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings,forn1ing a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the stove, the swinging top of which is removed, containing my improved downdraft structure, the damper being in the closed position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the damper open. Fig. 3 is a vertical detail sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, the downdraft-tube being shown only partially in section. Fig. at is an enlarged detail sectional view of the damper construction, taken on a line corresponding to line 4 4 of Fig. 1, the same being considerably enlarged. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation view of the downdraft tube or flue, the lower portion being shown in section.
In the drawings the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines, and similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A is a stove-top in a usual and convenient form. In the top plate A is provided a downwardly-depending socket A, which is preferably formed integral therewith, the same being formed in segments of an internal screw-thread. The upper part is suitably flanged or shouldered, and a recess is formed to one side, into which swings a lid B, the same being pivoted at a and being controlled by a rod 0, which extends inwardly and is connected to the lid by a suitable pivot a. A recess is formed below the lid to permit the swinging of this rod, as clearly appears in the different figures of the drawings. The swinging stove-top, where one is provided, is perforated to permit the free access of air. Within this downwardly-depending socket A is secured the downdraft-tube D, the same being made, preferably,of cast metal and formed with external screw-threads, which are adapted to fit within the internal screw-threads within the socket A, the same being fitted there quite closely, a small portion being cut away at the front and the rear of the socket to permit the tube to swing backward and forward within the stove, but without any lateral movement. In the top of the tube D is formed a little recess 2', to receive the end of the poker, as E, and it will be observed that by inserting the poker in this way the tube can be easily turned to the right or the left, thereby conveniently raised or lowered within the stove. This is of very great advantage because it secures the most effective results. These downdraft devices should be supported a very little distance above the coals, so that they will deliver the fresh air fully charged with oxygen into the space above the coal, and thereby consume all of the carbon which otherwise would escape and pass up the chimney. This structure makes it possible to burn slack in an ordinary stove and also to burn soft coal, which is the main objection to these sorts of fuel. Also by these means the fuel is necessarily economized, and better heating results are secured from the stove. Where the downdraftpipe is held at a fixed height in the stove, great pains is required in the proper filling of the stove not to get the coal too high and to get it high enough to secure the best results, whereas with this device, as the downdrafttube is fully adjustable, no attention need be given to the quantity of fuel introduced. Other means might be provided of adjusting the tube up and down which would, of course, secure this same desirable result.
I also desire to remark that a satisfactory damper, readily controllable for use with a device of this kind, is of very great advantage when it is desired to hold the fire, because unless some means of this kind is provided it is impossible to properly control the consumption of fuel in the stove. Again, if the damper of the stove is closed and there is no damper to the downdraft-tube smoke is likely to escape from the fire at this point.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a stove of a downwardly-depending socket A in the top thereof With internal screw-threads formed therein; a downdraft-tube with screw-threads engaging the same whereby it is readily adj usted up and down; and a notch for the engagement of the poker or other suitable device in the top of said downdraft-tube whereby it is readily adjusted up and down and a damper 13 above the said socket with connections 0 therefrom with the outside of the stove whereby the downdraft can be readily controlled.
2. The combination with a stove of a downwardly-depending socket A in the top thereof with internal screw-threads formed therein; a downdraft-tube with screw-threads engaging the same whereby it is readily adj usted up and down; and a damper B above the said socket whereby the downdraft can be readily controlled.
