METALLIC TIE AND RAIL FASTENER.

Be it known that I, JOHN BROOKES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at East Liverpool, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Tie and Rail Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in metallic tie and rail fasteners, and relates more particularly to that class wherein the use of nuts and bolts is entirely dispensed with.
The present invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby a rail may be securely held in position within the joint and allowed expansion and contraction.
The present invention has for its further object to construct a metallic tie and rail fastener of this character that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
TWith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointedout in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure l is a perspective View ofthe end of a tie, showing the rails in position therein. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the rails and fastener removed therefrom. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the tie, showing the rail in vertical section. Fig. t is a perspective view of the fastener. Fig. 5 is a similar View of the staple serving to lock the fastener in position. v
In these drawings the reference-numeral l represents the metallic tie, having formed on cach end thereof a chair 2. In the base of said chair isformed a groove 3 for the reception of the fastener 4, said fastener carrying an upper and a lower lip 5 and 6, between which the base '7 of the rail S is inserted. Said lips also have formed therein notches 9 and l0 for the reception of the staple ll for locking the same in position. The upper lip 5 of the fastener Il is preferably curved on the under face to conform to and receive the 011e side of the rail-base. The staples engage one on each end of the fastener and contact with the sides of the metallic tie l, thus securing the fastener against movement. The upper face of the lip 5 is engaged by a projection or rib l2, formed integral with the tie l and extending over and above the groove 3.
The manner of jointing the rails together is to secure the same end wise within the chair and apply the fastener. When this has been accomplished, the locking-staple is applied, preventing the fastener from being laterally displaced from engagement with the tie.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved metallic tie and rail fastener will be readily apparent fronithe foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanyin g drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters l. A. metallic tie and rail fastener comprising chairs carried by the tie with a groove formed in the base of the chair, a fastener carrying two lips engaging one side of the rail-base, and a staple straddling said fas-= tener on each end thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a metallic tie and rail fastener, achair formed integral with the tie on each end thereof with a groove formed in the base of the chair, a fastener carrying two lips seated in said groove, said lips engaging the upper and lower faces of one side of the rail-base and staples secured over the ends of said lips and engaging said tie, substantially as described.
