Be it known that I, HOWARD S. LANIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pants or Overalls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate two forms in which I have contemplated'embodying my invention, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.

Referring to the said drawings, Figure l represents, on an enlarged scale, a pair of pants or overalls embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents the lower part of one leg of a pair of pants or overalls turned inside out and showing my improved cuff ready to be applied thereto. Fig. 3 shows the two parts attached. Fig. 4 shows the lower part of one leg of pants or overalls with cuff attached and completed, a part being broken away to show the arrangement of the parts. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the pants leg and cuff in nal position before iinal stitching.

The object of my invention is to provide a reinforcing-cuff for the lower ends of the leg portions of pants, overalls, and the like,

whereby no inside hem is employed, and the edges of the legs are strengthened and held in shape.

In the drawings, A represents apair of overalls, of which ot a are the leg portions.

In carrying out my invention I prepare a cuff, (shown at B in Fig. 2,) preferably made with an inside and outside seam b b, as shown, which register with the inside and outside seams of the pants. The cuff is comparatively narrow around the side portions, but is ,of greater width vertically at lthe front and back, as indicated at ZJ h. This cuif is turned inside out and applied to the leg a, while it is also turned inside out, as shown in Figs. 2'and 3. Ordinarily I set the cuff up away from the bottom edge of the leg o, as shown in Fig. 3;

but this is not essential. I then stitch the cu and leg together by hand or machine, forming what I term the blind seam c. I then turn the leg and cud right side out and fold the leg just above the blind seam c, so that thepart a or hem of the leg below the seam will be turned up outside of the leg, while the partb2 of the cuff below the seam c will be turned up inside of the cuff, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. It will be seen that at the lower edge of the leg a there are four thicknesses of cloth, two of the leg proper and two of the cuff. The garment is now finished by stitching, preferably in two rows around the bottom edge at d through the four thicknesses of cloth and at e around the upper edge of the cuff, whichis turned under to leave a neat edge, as shown in Figs. l and 4.

It will be noted that there is no interior hem or projection of any kind in the leg a, which might catch in the wearers shoe, the interior being perfectly smooth to the bottom edge.

The construction just described gives a very neat finish to overalls to which it is particularly applicable, and reinforces them as to wear and stitfness'around the foot, where they are apt to wrinkle androt by absorbing moisture in walking. It will also be noted that the cuff is held at the bottom by the outer row or rows of stitches d and also by the inner or blind seam @,so that should the outer rows of stitches rot out the cuff and hem a will be held rmly bythe blind seam, which is protected to a great extent.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. A pair of pants or overalls, having the vlower portion of each leg turned up on the outside, to form a hem, and provided with a cuff for each leg, each cu having a hem turned up on the inner side andunited to the hem of the leg by a blind seam, the upper edge of each cuff being stitched to the leg, whereby the bottom portions of the legs are made perfectly smooth inside and said blind seam is protected from wear and from moisture, substantially as described.

2. A pair of pants or overalls, having the lower portion-of each leg turned up on the outside to form a hem, and provided with a cuff, the said cuff havingits lower edge turned up on the inner side and connected to said IOO hem by a blind seam, the upper and lower portions of said cuff being further united to the leg by rows of stitching, whereby the lower portions of said legs are made perfectly smooth on the inside and said blind seam is protected from wear and from moisture, substanlially as described.

3. A pair of pants or overalls, having the lower portion of each leg turned up on the outside to forln a hem, and provided with a cuff, the said cui having its lower edgeturned up on the inner side and united to said hem by a blind seam, said cuff being of greater depth at the front and rear portions of the leg than at the sides and having its upper edge turned down on the inside, said cu being further united to said leg by rows of stitching adjacent to its lower and upper edges, whereby the legs are made perfectly smooth on the inside and whereby the said blind seam is protected from wear and from moisture, substantially as described.
