IMPROVEMENT IN WAGONS.

TO ALL 'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: l
Be it known that I, VOSCO M. CHAFEE, of Xenia, in the county of Clay, and State of Illinois, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Wagons;k and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in Whichl i Figure 1 is a perspective View.
Figure 2 is a side elevation and longitudinal vertical section.
Figure 3 is a plan of the bolster-plate. I
The same letters are employed inall the gures in the indication of the same parts.
My invention consists, irst, in the mode ofhinging the tongue to the axle; and, secondly, in the construction of the bolster-plate and sand-board, the nature of which will be fully set forth in the following description and claims. v I
I have represented only the front axle, Sac., as my improvements relate only to the forwardA part of thewagon.
A is the `rocking-bolster, and B the axle; C the tongue, and D the reach. The bolster rests upon the bolster-plate E, through which the king-bolt K passes; and the plate and bolster are supported upon themetallic plate F, which is bolted to the axle B. The ripper part of the plate forms a circula1 bearing for the bolsterplate E, under which is an opening through the plate to receive the end. of the reach D, allowing it a free horizontal oscillatory play upon the king-bolt, which passes through the sand-board plate F and the plate E, and through the reach and axle, and also through thc eye in the end of the brace I, which is hinged to the under side of the reach.
The tongue of a wagon is usually attached at each end of the axle near the wheels; and as the-load carried upon the hind wheels is drawn by the reach attached to the king-bolt in the middle of the axle, any strain suddenly applied tends to bend or break the axle, as the power is applied at each end, and the resistance is at the centre. In order that the draught may be in the line ofthe resistance I hinge the tongue to the axle at G, and connect it with the ends of the axles by the braces II, fastened to the tongue, and hinged to the axle. By\ this means the strain is applied directly on the line of resistance by the hind wheels, and the irregular` strain on the front wheels met by the braces in the usual manner.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by LcttersnPa-tent, is-
1. I-Iinging the tongue or shafts of a wagon or other vehicle to the front axle, so as to obtain a direct centre draught, substantially as set forth.
2. "lhe combination of thc tongue C with a centre hinge at G, and the side-braces I-I, attached substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The plate F, forming the sand-board, axle-plate, and reach-receiver, combined in one piece, substantially as described.
4:. The combination of the bolster A, plates E and F, reach I), brace I, and king-bolt K, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speeiiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VOSCO M. CHAFEE.
