MACHINE FOR THREADING TAPE INTO EDGINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,946, dated October 8, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL KOPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Devices for Threading Tape or Ribbon into Lace Ed gin gs,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines employed for the purpose of inserting tape or ribbon into lace edgings; and the object'of my invention is to provide in the same device means for threading the lace upon a needle and for storing the same thereon and for thereafter removing the lace edging with the tape or ribbon inserted in the holes therein.
In carrying out my invention I employ devices for holding the tubular needle at either end, devices for feeding along and guiding the lace edgings through the machine, and regulatable devices for moving the lace edging back and forth across the point of the tubular needle, so that as the lace edging is drawn along the needle passes through the holes therein and the edging is drawn upon the tubular needle in a closely-folded condition, and I employ devices for advancing the folded lace edging along the tubular needle and for drawing the same and the threaded tape or ribbon from the said tubular needle.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section and elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan representing my improvements. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the regulatable devices for moving the lace edgings across the point of the needle.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section and partial elevation representing one form of tubular needle, and Fig. 5 is a cross-section of a modified form of needle.
The standards a a are of any desired construction and carry revolving frames 2 for the superposed layers of lace edging as wound up, the standard a holding the lace edging to be unwound and the standard a the lace edging as wound up with the tape or ribbon inserted in the openings therein. 12 I) represent the side frames of the machine; 0, a roller mounted in suitable bearings in the side frame and beneath which the lace edging from the frame of the standard a passes to and between a pair of plain rollers (Z d, also mounted in suitable bearings in the said side frame. The pair of rollers e e is also mounted in suitable hearings in the side frames, and they are grooved to receive one end of the tubular needle h, and I prefer to employ pairs of retary brushes f f and g g, mounted above and below the tubular needle inv suit-able bearings in the said side frames.
' I provide slideways i 6 upon suitable supports and thereon place heads 3, and below the said slideways through bosses in the said heads are right and left hand feed-screws 4, turned by cranks or handles at one end, and 63 by which screws the said heads 3 are moved toward or away from one another. The said heads carry arms 5 in the form of pairs of fingers notched at the ends to receive, grip, and support thetubular needle adjacent to 7 o either end. I provide adjacent to the point of the needle a vertically-movable slotted frame is, having suitable guides for directing the movement thereof. This frame is provided with a connecting-rod 6, extending to a crank or disk 7, mounted upon a suitable shaft 8. A pair of bevel-wheels 9 conneets the shaft 8 and the shaft 10, and upon the shaft 10 is an adjustable roller 11, the periphery of which bears upon the disk 12. This disk 12 is provided with a shaft in a standard 13, and a pulley 14, rotated by suitable power devices, turns the shaft and the disk 12, and through the roller 11, shaft 10, bevel-wheels 9, shaft 8, crank or disk 7, connecting-rod 6, the slotted frame it is moved vertically.
The lace edging m extends from the frame of the standard a, beneath the roller 0, through between rollers 01 (1, through the slotted frame it, and through between the pair of grooved 9o rollers e e, and as the said frame 70 is moved vertically across the point of the needle and the lace edging is moving through the machine the same is threaded upon the tubular needle h, said needle passing through the holes 5 in the said lace edging in opposite directions, so that the lace is folded back and forth as the same is threaded upon the needle.
The rollers e e are grooved sufficiently to permit the tubular needle to pass between the loo same and project beyond and its point to come adjacent to the vertically-movable frame is.
The rotary brushesff and g g draw the folded lace edging along upon the tubular needle, the distant end of the tubular needle being held firmly by the arms 5 of the slideway 2", the arms 5 and heads 3 of the'slideway t being drawn apart by the right and left hand screw 4 while the edging is being threaded upon the needle. The folding of the lace edging back and forth as the same is threaded upon the needle permits a large amount of lace edging to occupy but a small longitudinal space of the needle. Consequently many yards of lace edging can be threaded upon the needle between the rotary brushes 9 g and the slideway 2".
The tubular needle h is preferably made with a removable solid head h fitting the end nearest to the vertically movable slotted frame 70, the other end of the needle being drawn to almost a point and cut through transversely. After the quantity of lace edging has been threaded upon the needle and advanced by the brushes, so that the needle adjacent to the slideway t' is clear, the heads and arms of the said slideway are advanced by the feed-screw until the arms grip the needle, whereupon the heads of the slideway t are separated by the feed-screw, so as to free the heretofore-engaged end of the needle.
As hereinbefore stated, the tubular needle may be in the form of a plain tube, as shown in Fig. 4, or of the form shown in the modification, Fig. 5, in which the outer shell is provided with an inner shell concentrically placed with reference to the outer shell and provided with spacedapart'edges to permit the ribbon or tape to draw out of the circular position occupied thereby within the outer tubular portion and between the same and the inner tube.
I do not limit myself to the form of needle employed; but the same must be smaller than the openings in the lace edging and yet must be able to take in a ribbon or tape of full width required to be drawn through the openings in the lace edging. The sizes of these openings vary, some being larger than others, and the openings varying some even in the same piece of edging, and to adapt one machine to edgings having various sizes of openings a regulatable device is necessary. This I provide for in the adjustable roller 11, traveling upon the face of the disk 12, because vwhere the said roller occupies a position nearer to the center of the disk the movement will consequently be slower than where the roller occupies a position nearer the periphery of the disk, and as this roller is adjustable it is consequently but the work of a few moments trial to so place the roller 11 as to impart the requisite amount of vertical or upand-down movement to the slotted frame 7c, so as to accurately bring the openings in the lace edging into proper position for threading the same upon the tapering end of the tubular needle as the lace edging is drawn along by the sets of rollers.
The ribbon or tape is to be passed through the tubular needle in any desired manner, and it is preferable to pass the same through the needle before releasing the heads 3 upon the slideway t. With the plain open form of needle shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4 I prefer to pass a flat steel wire or band through the transverse opening and along through the tubular needle, removing the solid head h to connect the tape or ribbon to this and to draw the same forward through the needle until the advancing end of the tape or ribbon projects, then the advancing end of the lace edging is brought forward to meet the tape or ribbon, and the two are fastened together. Thelace edging can now be drawn off the needle and be connected to a revolving frame such, for instance, as that shown on the stand ard Ct'-'Ll16 turning of which will draw the lace edging off the needle with the tape or ribbon inserted or passed back and forth through the openings therein, and the material with the tape or ribbon in place is ready for the market.
I claim as my invention-- 1. In a machine for inserting tape or ribbon into lace edgings, the combination with supports for the lace edging and rollers for feeding the same along through the machine, of a tubular needle, independcntlyadjustable devices for grasping and holding the tubular needle at either end, means for moving the lace edging vertically across the point of the needle so as to pass the point of the needle through the openings in the lace edging and the edging upon the needle in a backward and forward folded condition, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine for inserting tape or ribbon into lace edgings, the combination with supports for the lace edging and rollers for feeding the same along through the machine, of a tubular needle, independently-adjustable devices for grasping and holding the tubular needle at either end, means for moving the lace edging vertically across the point of the needle so as to pass the point of the needle through the openings in the lace edging and the edging upon the needle in a backward and forward folded condition, and means for regulating the speed of movement of the lace edging across the point of the needle to provide for openings of different sizes in the lace edging, substantially as set forth. In a machine for threading tape or ribbon into lace edgings, the combination with a tubular needle, of devices adjacent to the respective ends of the tubular needle for grasping and holding the same, each of said devices comprising a slideway, heads, a right and left hand feed-screw for moving the heads toward or from one another and arms for gripping the tubular needle, devices forsupporting and feeding along the lace edging through the machine, rollers adjacent to the pointed end of the needle, means for turning the said rollers to feed along the lace edging, means for threading the edging upon the needle, means located between the slideways for moving the folded edging lengthwise of the needle, substantially as set forth.
4. In a machine for threading tape or ribbon into lace edgings, the combination with a tubular needle, of devices adjacent to the respective ends of the tubular needle for grasping and holding the same, each of said devices comprising a slideway, heads, a right and left hand feed-screw for moving the heads toward or from one another, and arms for gripping the tubular needle, a pair of grooved rollers adjacent to the pointed end of the needle and throughbetween which the needle passes, a vertically movable slotted frame through which the lace edging passes, said frame being located adjacent to the point of the needle and adapted in its vertical movement to thread the edging upon the needle, means for moving said frame with a predetermined speed and means for advancing the folded lace edging along the needle, substantially as set forth.

In a machine for inserting tape or ribbon into lace edgings, the combination with a tubular needle and means for supporting the same, and means for advancing the lace edgin g through the machine, of a vertically-movable slotted frame through which the lace edging passes and by which the same is threaded upon the needle, a shaft and a connectingrod for moving the said frame vertically, a
