Description

A. BEDFORD. STRAP ATTACHMENT.
No. 68,341. Patented Sept. 3, 1867.
@ya MAM @uiten tstrs atrnt @frn ALM-A BEDFORD, or ooLDWJATER, MICHIGAN. Letters .Patent No.'63,341, dated September 3, 1867; vemteolated August 2.*5, 1867.
IMPROYED' STRAP-ATTAGHMEN T.
TO ALL WHOM ITv MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that'I, ALMA BEDFCRD, oi`=the Acity of Cold\vater,'in the county of Branch, and State of Michigan, have invented e. new and improved Device for Attaching Straps, &c., to Leather, 010th, or other textile-or pliable material, as heretofore briefly described'in a caveat which I filed in the United States Patent Oce on the 22d day of January, 1866; vand I do hereby declare that the following is' a full and Vexact descripi tion thereof, reference being had to the accompany-ing drawings, in which Y i Figure 1 is a plan view of straps secured by means of my invention tothe edges of blankets,
Figure 2, a section through the line :v a: of iig. 1.
Similar letters indicatelke parts in all the gures'. i
The nature of my invention consists in the use of disks or 'plates of .'unequal diameters or dimensions, one or both of which are mede concave, or with upturned edges, Vend which are to be rdrawn together by means of a central screw for the purpose of clamping between' them any pliable fabric or material, and aiiordi-n'g thereby a secure fastening or' hold for astrnp or other device combined wthseid-pl'tes and screw The strap may he combined with the plates and screw either -by causing the screw to-pass through the strap or by securing the latter to either of tlie plates by rivets or`other devices.
I preffer to cast, stamp, or swage my fastening-clamps A A of metal, into n. circular concave-convex form, as illustrated in figs, 1 and 2 of the drawings, making them i'n -pairs of unequal diameters. A simple aperture is formed centrally through one of the concave-convex plates in each lpair, andthe other is provided with-a corresponding centraLscrew-threaded aperture. Where leather straps are to be secured by menns of these clamping-plates, the rim of the'upper or larger plate A is recessed or cut away, as at c, figs. 1 and 2, ton depth atleast equal to the thickness of .the strap B, to allow itto pass freely under seid plate. The strapin such case is pierced with e. holenear its end to receive the screw securing the ple-tes together, which thus serves also to hold the strap. In using the clamping-plates A A', thcy'are placed opposite eachother npon the two sides of the fabric E, with their Aconcave` sides inward, (ols'seen in ig. 2,) and a screw, -D, is inserted through the Simple aperture in the one plate, A, and passing through the fabricE and 4the hole in the strap B, is then screwed into the'threaded aperture-of the opposite-plateiA. By this meansth'e two plates are clamped tightly' together upon the cloth, and their vunequal diameters cause them to bite the same, and thus take a'firm hohl thereof withoutV injury thereto. y
If the strap or other device to be fastened uponthe fabric be yieiding'in its nature, .the edge of the upper plate need not be cnt away, (as 'at c, figs. 1 and 2,) as for a leather strap, but-may'bind thereon, and thus hold it without the aid of thescrew D, in theimanncr illustrated. Although I pefer to use circular plates,1they may be made elliptical or rectangular, or otherwise polygonal in outline.
Havingv thus fully described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secureby 'Letters Patent- My improved fastening device, consisting of a. clamping-plate, mede concave or with anl upturned edge, combined by means of a. central, independent screw with la.n .opposite plate of smaller diameter or dimension, the whole arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set f orth.
' ALMA BEDFORD.

D. THOMPSON.
