A TTORNEV s m moromya. WASHINGTON a c UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROSINE H. SLOAN, OF NEBRASKA CITY, NEBRASKA.
BRAIDING-GUIDE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,924, dated December 31, 1901.
Application filed April 30, 1901. $eria1No. 58,161. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROSINE H. SLOAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nebraska City, in the county of Otoe and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braiding-Guides for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a braidinguide for sewing-machines which enables the operator to trim goods without first basting the trimming thereon.
My device consists of a plate adapted to be held to the machine and of means for holding the trimming in proper position as it is being sewed to the goods.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of myattachment attached to a rod, which is secured to the presser-foot of a sewing-machine. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. 1, the attaching-arm, rod, and foot of the machine not being shown. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the guides. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the other guide. Fig. 5 is a face View of the attachment with the attaching-arm left off. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one edge of the lower plate, showing a loop under which the trimming is run and the means for securing one end of the last-mentioned guide to the plate. Fig. 7 shows the face of the swell and the under end of the sleeve by which a thumblatch is secured to said plate.
My invention is described as follows:
1 represents the plate of the attachment. This plate is provided with an arm 2, which extends forward and turns over a rod 3 and is secured to the said rod by means of a thumb-screw t. This rod 3 is secured in an opening in the rear part of the machine-foot 5 by a thumb-screw (3. This is one of the means of securing the said attachment to a sewing-machine; but as allsewing-machines are not provided with the said rod 3 said attachment may be secured to the sewing-machine by a thumb'screw passing through a perforation 7 in said plate and a threaded perforation in the plate of the machine, using a washer between the plate of the machine and the attachment in order to raise it a little, that the goods to be braided or trimmed may pass under the attachment, or the attachment may be secured to the machine in any other substantial way, the invention not consisting of the manner in which it is attached to the machine, but of the combination of its parts, which enable the operator to braid or trim goods without first basting the same to the goods.
The plate 1 is provided with two longitudinal slots 8, which run nearly the entire length of the plate and are parallel to each other. A sliding guide 9 fits on the top of the plate and has a cross-head 10, with downwardly-extending flanges 11, which lit and work back and forth in the slots 8, and extending upwardly and at right angles to the head 10 is a flange 12, against which one edge of the trimming works. Said guide is provided with a longitudinal slot 13, and in said longitudinal slot 13 works a thumb-screw 14, which enters a perforation in the plate 1, said guide being adapted to slide back and forth, so that any reasonable width of trimming may be accommodated, and when the guide is properly set it is secured in place by said thumb-screw. On the near side-that is, the side nearest the operator-is a loop 15, which extends nearly the entire length of the plate, its ends secured to the plate and leaving a spacebetween the plate and the loop for the trimming to run. Thus the trimming is held in position between the lower end of the loop 15 and the lower end of the guide 9. To the nearest edge of the plate is secured a right-angle guide 16. Said guide has in its right-hand end a longitudinal slot 17, so that it may be shifted to the right or to the left, and is secured in place by a thumb-screw 1S. Extending from the near side of the plate is a perforated projection 19, to which is pivoted a thumb-latch 20, adapted to work over said right-angle guide 16 and hold the same in place. This thumblatch cooperates with the thumb-screw 18. The right-angle part 21 of this rightangle guide extends rearwardly on a parallel line with the left-hand end of the plate 1.
In operation the goods to be braided or trimmed work under the plate, and the trimming passes over the guide 16 and under the loop 15, its right-hand edge working against down and bring the trimming up over the left-hand end of the plate 1, its right edge,
the flange 12'. Thus the trimming is held in position while the goods passes along under the foot of the machine, and the trimming may be stitched to the goods in its center at its right edge orleft edge, and in order to measure the distance between the trimming the right-angle part 21 is shoved to the left or to the right, thus measuring the distance We want between the trimming. If we wish to stitch the trimming on each edge, We first stitch it on its left edge, and then when so.
stitched We slip the goods and the trimming parallel to each other; a slotted guide, having flanges and running to the right and left in said slots; a thumb-screw securing the said guide in place; a loop having each end secured to the plate, and leaving between the plate and the loop, a space; a right-angle guide :having in one end a longitudinal slot and secured to the plate by a thumb-screw; a perforated projection extending from the near edge of the plate and a thumb-latch pivoted to said projection, and adapted to cooperate with the thumb-screw, for holding said last-mentioned guide in place; said attach ment adapted to be secured to a'sewing-mav chine in any substantial way, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes Witnesses:
