INVENTOR Jalamon J. Lovaleu' BY f, I
- AT 05m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON J. LOVELESS, OF WVEST LANCASTER, OHIO.
FENCE CONSTRUCTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,893, dated December 31, 1901. Application filed October 26, 1901- Serial No. 80,047. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, SOLOMON J LOVELESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVest Lancaster, in the county of Fayette and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fence Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of fences; and the objects of myinvention are to provide a strong and durable fence of simple construction which will withstand the action of high winds, to provide an improved construction of two-section metallic fence-posts, and to so construct the same as to facilitate the ready adjustment of said posts or standards, and to produce other improvements the details of construction of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of portions of one section and a portion of an adjoining section of my improved fence, and Fig. 2 is an end View of one section thereof.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout both views.
In carrying out my'invention I provide at desirable intervals fence-posts or fence-supporting standards, each of which consists of two brace-bars 1, the latter preferably being formed of metal, although other material may be employed. The bars forming each post or standard are arranged in opposing pairs, the upper portions thereof being vertical, or substantially so, and from said upper vertical portions said bars are inclined outward and downward to meet the ground. The upper and parallel portions of the bars 1 are united by one or more transverse bolts 2, and between these upper portions of said bars 1 is clamped by the tightening of said bolts a horizontal cable wire or rod 3, the latter extending throughout the line of fence and at each end of said fence-line being suitably connected, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, with the upper portion of a fence-post 4, which is driven into the ground. Supported from the central portion of the lowerbolt2 and between the bars 1, through the medium of suitably-looped supporting or suspending wires 5, are the fencesections, which, as indicated in the drawings, may comprise parallel longitudinallyarranged boards or bars 6, about the end portions of which are looped the downward continuations of said wires 5. While the ends of these boards or bars ordinarily terminate opposite the inner sides of the standard or post sections 1, it will be observed by reference to Fig. 1 that they may be so extended at the end of the fence-line as to practically close the space between the post 4. and the first standard or post 1 1.
Although the fence is described as formed of the connected bars or boards 6, it is obvious that any desirable form of fence-sections may be suspended from the bolts 2, and while the post or standard sections 1 are shown as resting upon the ground it is obvious that the same may be, if desired, partially embedded therein. It will also be observed that the clamping of the upper portions of said standard-sections might be accomplished with but one bolt, if desired.
From the construction shown and described it will be seen that the outwardly-inclined post or standard sections 1 will serve as braces for the fence and operate to resist pressure from either side, while the cable 3 when firmly clamped between said post or standard sections and drawn taut will serve to prevent longitudinal movement of the fence. In case one of the standard-sections 1 should become rusted or broken it is obvious that it may be readily detached from its opposing section and anew section introduced in place thereof.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a fence construction the combination with the standards or posts each comprising opposing and outwardly-inclined sections 1 having their upper portions detachably connected by one or more bolts, a horizontal cable 3 clamped between the upper portions of said sections and secured at its ends to fixed bodies, of fence-sections suspended from said post-clamping bolts and between the sections thereof, substantially as specified.
SOLOMON J. LOVELESS.
