Description

No. 687,983. Patented Dec. 3, 190i. R. M. HARTNETT.
BOX.
(Application filed July 17, 1901.)
(N0 Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROSE MARY HARTNETT, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1\To. 687,983, dated December 3, 1901.
Application filed July 17, 1901. Serial No. 68,684. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RosE MARY HARTNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of Oalifornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlngs.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in boxes especially adapted for use as souvenirs; and its primary object is to provide devices of this character the lids of which each bears one of the letters of the alphabet thereon. The bodies of the boxes conform to the outer edges or contour of the letters on the cover, and one of the objects is to so construct these bodies that any two or more of the boxes may be connected so as to form a monogram upon the cover.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the detached sections of a monogram-box. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts assembled, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the box.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, l is a box lid or cover upon which is arranged one of the letters of the alphabet. This letter may be molded, printed, or secured upon the cover, and a stem 2 projects from each side thereof. These stems are open at their ends and are equidistant from the lower end of the letter. The cover of the box conforms, as far as possible, to the shape of the letter thereon, and the body 3 of the box is adapted to project into the cover and it also conforms thereto.
A stem 4 extends from each side of the boxbody, and they are so located as to be covered by the stem portions 2 of the lid. The stems at are open at the ends, and a flap 5 is secured to and projects outward from the upper side of the right-hand stem 4 and the lower side of the stem 4 upon the left of the box. These flaps are adapted to be provided with a suitable adhesive for the purpose here inafter more fully described.
Curved end pieces 6 are preferably employed for closing the unused stems 4 of the boxes. These pieces are of any suitable shape,
and each is providedalong one side with an outwardly-projecting flap 7.
A box is formed for each letter of the alphabet, and when it is desired to form a desired monogram-box the two boxes are placed in proper relation to each other and their adjacent flaps 5 are moistened. This will soften the adhesive, and the flaps are then placed in the stems 4. When the flaps adhere to the stems, said stems will be held firmly together, thereby uniting the two boxes. The outer stems 4:, which are not used, are then closed in a similar manner by means of the end pieces 6. These pieces are preferably similar, so that by reversing them they can be used either at the right or left end of the monogram. I have shown no means for securing the two sections of the cover together. However, any suitable means may be employed for this purpose, if desired. It will be understood that three or more letters may be secured together to form a monogram.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I therefore claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a cover the outer edge of which conforms with a character upon said cover; of stems at the sides of the cover and equidistant from one end of the cover, a box conforming with, and adapted to project into, the cover, a stem at each side of the box adapted to be covered by the stems of the cover, and securing-flaps extending from the box-stems.
2. The combination with a cover having a character thereon and a stem at each side of the character; of a box conforming with, and adapted to project into, the cover, an open stem at each side of the box, an end piece,
and means for securing said piece to one of thestems.
3. A monogram-box formed of two or more boxes each comprising a cover having a character thereon, the edge of the cover conf0rming to the outer edge of the character, stems at the sides of the cover equidistant from one end of the cover, a. box conforming with, and adapted to project into, the cover, an open stem at each side of the box and adapted to be covered by the stems of the cover, flaps extending from the box-stems whereby said boxes are secured together, end pieces, and flaps thereto for securing them to the outer stems of the monogram-box.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROSE MARY HARTNETT.
