REGISTER-DIAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,210, dated November 26, 1901.
Application filed July 12, 1901. Serial No. 67,962. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWALTER N. DURANT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registor-Dials; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Myinvention has especial reference to dials employed in counting-machines; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through one of my improved dials, taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the said dial. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same drawn to a reduced scale. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail perspective views illustrating respectively the flanged hub and washer of my said dial.
Referring to the drawings, a represents the disk of my said dial, made of thin flexible non-metallic material-sueh, for example, as celluloidon one surface of which are imprinted or otherwise marked the nine digits and zero character common to the dials of counting-machines. The said disk is formed with an annular central perforation for the reception of the metallic hub b, the latter being formed with an annular flange c, which bears against one surface of the disk ct, the said hub projecting through the disk-openin g a sufficient distance to receive the metallic washer 65, whose outer diameter corresponds to that of the flange o of the hub b. When the parts are assembled together, as best shown in Fig. 1, the metal of the hub Z) is forcibly displaced at intervals about its edge, forming tongues e e, which, being integral with the hub, serve to securely hold the parts in their assembled position, and the dial is complete and ready to be driven on its post or shaft, the hub I) having a smooth bore and intended to be held to place by a sharp driving fit.
Dials thus constructed have many advantages over the old-style solid-metal dials in ordinary use in counting machines. The thin flexible disks can be readily imprinted with the desired numerals and the dials are much lighter in weight than the metallic dials, which is an added advantage, in addition to which their flexibility permits them to yield in the event of encountering any slight obstruction within the machine and perform their duties without injury to any part. A decided advantage of the described thin flexible non-metallic disks over the oldtime solid heavy metal disks lies in the fact that with the last-named in the rapid movement of the dials the momentum thereby acquired had a tendency to carry the same beyond the proper point, and hence register inaccurately, which has been found in actual practice to be wholly obviated by the use of my present described improved disks.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a dial, the combination with a disk of thin flexible material formed with an annular central perforation therethrough, of a rigid hub projected through said opening and formed with an integral annular flange bearing against one surface of said disk, and a washer surrounding said hub and bearing against the opposite surface of saiddisk, the metal of the hub being displaced and forming tongues projecting from the edge of the said hub integrally therewith over the adjacent outer surface of the said washer, and holding all the parts securely and permanently in their assembled position.
