STAMP RETAINING DEVICE;
(Application filed June '7 1901.)
(No Model.) 1
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT F. HEROLD, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
STAM P-R ETAININ'G DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,514, dated October 29, 1901.
Application filed June 7, 1901- Serial No. 63,666. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT F. HEROLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Stamp-Retaining Device, of which the following is a specification.
Adhesive stamps affixed to barrels and kegs are liable to become separated therefrom in several ways, as by being rubbed ofi while wet or by failure of the paste to adhere after it is dry. This is especially true of the portion of the stamp remaining after mutilation by removal of the cork covered thereby. It is the object of the present invention to retain the stamp in proper position upon said barrels and kegs until intentionally removed therefrom, notwithstanding the paste thereon may not adhere.
My invention consists in a clip or binding device affixed to a barrel adjacent to the taphole and adapted to bind a stamp thereon.
It also consists in the parts and in the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a perspective View of an end of a barrel with my device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is aplan View thereof, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof.
' My device consists of a clip or clamp mounted on a barrel in position to bear against the portion thereof surrounding the tap-hole. A simple form of construction is that shown in the drawings. In this construction the clip is made of a single piece of wire comprising a loop 1 of a form to surround the tap-hole 2, while the end portions are twisted together to form a resilient shank 3. The extreme ends 4 of the wire are turned at right angles to the shank and are driven into the wood of the barrel 5. A staple 6, straddling the shank, is also driven into the wood of the barrel, so as to insure the pressure of the loop portion against the barrel. The portion of the loop opposite the shank is shaped and turned up slightly, so as to constitute a convenient finger-grip 7 or means for raising the clip.
In practice the device is used as follows: When the barrel is to be filled with beer, the cork or stopper is inserted in the tap-hole without any interference from the stamp-retainer. The clip is then raised sufficiently to allow In tap- As the stamp-retainer surrounds In case the paste should.
the tap-hole, it bears against the mutilated I edges of the stamp and holds the same in place until the barrel is returned to the brewer It is obvious that divers modifications may be made in the form and construction of the I clip or clamp without departing from my invention, and I do not wish to restrict myself to the construction hereinbefore described.
What I claim is"- 1. The combination with a barrel of a stampretainer permanently affixed to said barrel near the tap-hole, and comprising a piece of resilient metal arranged to bind against said barrel and having an opening arranged to allow the free use of the tap-hole, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a barrel of a stampretainer affixed to said barrel near the taphole thereof, said stamp-retainer consisting of a piece of resilient wire shaped into aloop surrounding said tap-hole, and a shank portion affixed to the barrel, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a barrel of a stampretaineraffixed to said barrel near the taphole thereof, said stamp-retainer consisting of a piece of wire shaped into a loop surrounding said tap-hole, and a shank portion affixed to the barrel, and a staple for fastening said shank portion to said barrel, substantially as described.
l. The combination with a barrel of a stampretainer affixed to said barrel near the taphole thereof, said stamp-retainer consisting of a piece of wire shaped into a loop surrounding said t-ap-hole, a finger-grip on said loop, and a shank portion affixed to said bar- ROBERT F. HEROLD.
In presence of- WILLIAM P. CARR, JAMES A. CARE.
