TROWEL.
(No Model.)
[TNESS INVENOR p1: Ncmns PETERS ca, mmuwo. wxsnmorou. u. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT GEE-ICE.
GEORGE A. LUCAS, OF SOUTH HANOVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
TROWEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,576, dated October 15, 1901.
Application filed February 9, 1901. Serial No. 46,630. (No model-l T0 (11 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LUCAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Hanover, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trowels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to trowels; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the trowel. Fig. 2 is an end View. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the catch mechanism. Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on the line 00 no in Fig. 3.
This trowel is specially adapted for smoothing the plaster in the corners of rooms.
A represents two plates, which are set at an angle and are connected together by a hinge ct, so that no portion of the hinge projects beyond their outer surfaces.
B represents arms which are pivoted together and to handle-bars b by pivots I). These arms are also pivoted to lugs c on the plates A by pins 0'. These arms have plates cl around their pivots b, which are provided with holes for the locking-rods d".
C is the handle, which is secured between the two handle-bars b. \Vhen the lockingrods are retracted, the arms may be turned on their pivots b, so that the plates A can be set at any angle to suit the corner of the room; but when the locking-rods are not retracted the handle, handle-bars, arms, and plates are all secured together rigidly.
D is a guide-cylinder secured to bars g, the
outer ends g of which are bent downward and also assist in supporting the locking-rods and the pivots h. The outer ends of the bars g are securedto the handle-bars b in any approved manner. The locking-rods are retractible and are provided with catch mechanism of approved construction.
E is a shaft j'ournaled in the cylinder D and provided with a cross-bar e inside it.
F is a knob for turning the shaft E, secured on its projecting end above the cylinder.
Two pins f project from the end portions of the cross-bar 6 through slots in the bottom of the cylinder, and the locking-rods d are pivoted to these pins.
G represents springs inside the cylinder which normally hold the locking-rods in engagement with the plates (Z, so that the plates A cannot turn 011 their pivot. The lockingrods are retracted by turning the knob F, and when retracted the plates A can be set at various angles to suit the corners of the room.
What I claim is-- 1. In a trowel, the combination, with two hinged plates, of a handle, handlebars supporting the handle, arms pivoted to the handle-bars and to the said plates, and rods projecting through holes in the overlapping portions of the said handle-bars and arms and operating to lock the said plates at various angles, substantially as set forth.
2. In a trowel, the combination, with two hinged plates, of a handle, handle-bars supporting the handle, arms pivoted to the handle-bars and to the said plates, locking-rods engaging with holes in the upper end portions of the said arms, and catch mechanism for operating the said locking-rods supported by the handle-bars under the handle, sub stantially as set forth.
3. In a trowel, the combination, with two hinged plates, of a handle, handle-bars supporting the handle, arms pivoted to the handle-bars and to the said plates, a guide-cylim der, bars securing the guide-cylinder to the handle-bars under the handle, a shaft journaled in the said cylinder and provided with an operating knob, a cross-bar secured on the said shaft inside the cylinder and provided with projecting pins, locking-rods pivoted to the said pins and engaging with-holes in the upper ends of the said arms, and springs for holding the looking-rods in engagement with the said arms, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. LUCAS.
