UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. BUTLER, OF SOUTHINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE SOUTHINGTON CUTLERY 00., OF SAME PLACE.
TOOL FOR DRESSING EMERY-WHEELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,634, dated May 7, 1901.
Application filed January 28, 1901- Serial No. 45,040. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BUTLER, of Sout-hington, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Tools for Dressing Emery- Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description .of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specifi-' cation, and represent, in
Figure 1, a perspective view of an emerywheel dresser constructed in accordance with my in vention, the handle portion being broken away; Fig. 2, a transverse sectional View of.
grease and rendered smooth or, as it is commonly called, dull.
The object of this invention is to produce a dresser which will readily and effectively cut or clear the face of an emery-wheel without unnecessarily cutting away the surface of the wheel and at the same time produce a dresser which will withstand the wear occasioned by pressure against the face of an emery-wheel; and it consists of a series of cutters arranged side by side, the alternate cutters having pointed and the intermediate cutters having blunt teeth, which not only protect the wear of the cutters with the pointed teeth, but open a clean and level surface on the wheel, and in certain details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
As herein shown, the outer end A of a suitable handle is formed with two arms B C, between which thecutters are arranged, the said arms being formed with feet or projections D, by which a proper purchase may be had when the tool is in use. Alternate cutters E are formed with pointed teeth F, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, while the in termediate cutters G are formed with blunt teeth H, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. These cutters are mounted upon a sleeve I, through which a pin J extends, the pin being mounted in the outer ends of the arms, so that the teeth of the cutters project beyond the ends of the arms. The said pin extends through the arm C and is provided at its outer end with threads K for engagement with a threaded opening in the arm B, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and so that the cutters are free to revolve upon the sleeve I and the sleeve I to revolve upon the pin J, thus reducing friction to the minimum.
With alternately-arranged cutters having blunt and pointed teeth the face of an emerywheel may be readily cleaned or sharpened, the pointed teeth serving to cut the face of the wheel, while the blunt teeth protect the pointed teeth and assist in leveling the face of the wheel.
It will be understood from the foregoing that I am aware that emery-wheel dressers comprising a series of disk-like cutters have been arranged in the outer end of a suit-able handle or holder, and therefore do not wish .to be understood as claiming, broadly, such as my invention; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An emery-wheel dresser, comprising a handle and disk-like cutters mounted in the outer end thereof parallel with each other, alternating cutters provided with pointed teeth and the intermediate cutters with blunt teeth, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
