UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
VERNON BOYLE, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
MACHINE FORPUNCHING JACQUARD-CARDS'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 678,040, dated July 9, 1901.
Original application iiled lloveni'ber 13, 1899, Serial No: 736,835. Divided and application filed December 4, 1900, Serial N01 38,624. Again divided and this application filed April 8, 1901. Serial No. 54 786. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VERNON ROYLE', a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Paterson, in the county of Pas'saic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Punching J acguard-Cards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in machines for punching jacquard-cardm'and particularly to the punch-head which carries the keys for locking and releasing the punches.
My present invention is a division of my application Serial No. 38,624, filed December 4, 1900, which in turn was a division of my application Serial No. 736,835, filed November 13, 1899, and is directed to means for relieving the strain upon the hand of the operator in manipulating the punch-keys.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of the punch-head.
Fig. 2 is a view of the same in top plan, and
Fig. 3 is an end view.
The punch-head is denoted by a, the rods for raising and lowering it by b c, and the gang of punches by d. The keys on the front of the head which are intended to control the punches for punching the peg and lace holes in the card are denoted by e f g h t', and those on the opposite side of the punch-head'for controlling the punches for punching the pattern-holes in the card are denoted as a whole by k.
In order to bring the punch-keys on the front of the head, which, as above stated, control the punches for punching the peg and lace holes in the card, within convenient reach of the operator while the fingers of the hand are manipulating the keys 7c on the opposite side of the punch-head, I provide a lateral extension Z, which may be fixed to the end of the middle key g and its free end carried into suchposition with relation to the two keys 7?, and i to the right of it- -for example, to the position rrt-that'the thumb of the right hand of the operator may cover at the same time the two keys h i and the end m of the extension which controls the third key g, While the "thumb of theleft hand of the operator readily controls the other two keys 6 and f at the left of the center. This enables the right hand of the operator to be thrown over into the natural position on the head to permit the free op eration of the fingers of the hand in manipu lating the keys is at the back, and the strain heretofore caused and which has had a tendency to distort the hand of the operator by daily manipulation of the keys is avoided, and the wear upon the muscles and nerves of the operator is materiallylessened.
What I claimis The combination with the punch-head and the punch-controlling keys projecting from the opposite sides of the head, of a thumbpiece extending laterally from one of the keys to-bring the said key under convenient con- .trol of the thumb when engaging adjacent keys, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have sign ed my name, in-presence of two witnesses, this 15th day of March,
VERNON BOYLE. Witnesses:
D. B. VAN BUREN, HEBER BOYLE.
