XVILLIAM FRIEDLANDER,

ATENT OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
TIP FOR FISHING-RODS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 676,554, dated June 18, 1901.
Application filed February 27, 1901. Serial No, 49,114. (No model-) To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that LWILLIAM FRIEDLANDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah, in
the State of Oregon, have invented a new and- My invention relates generally to fishing rods of the style used for fishing with dies, and particularly to the means for playing the line off the tip end of the rod upon the line being cast; and my invention has for one object to provide a simple device like a guidering through which the line runs while playing off the reel, such guide-ring to be made swiveling, so as to follow the twisting and twirling of the line, and by so doing prevent the same from becoming tangled.
It is further the object of my invention to embody the above-mentioned features in a new article of manufacture-that isto say, to make a tip provided with such swiveling guide ring and adapted to be readily attached to any rod, and the tip so obtained is,-
besides, to be inexpensive to manufacture, so'
as to add but a trifle comparatively to the cost of the rod.
I attain these objects in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In such drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation showing the top end of a fishing-rod having my improved tip affixed thereon; and Fig. 2 shows my improved tip in vertical section, so that the construction thereof may be seen. In both figures, of course, the illustrations are very much enlarged for convenience.
In describing my invention the referenceletters designate the parts referred to.
The fishing-rod, of which the top end a is seen in the drawings, may be of any convenient material. My-improved tip b is affixed to such end in the usual manner. The tip comprises a sleeve b, slightly tapering, so as to fit the tapering end of the rod. Such sleeve may be made of any suitable piece of tube. In the upper extremity of the sleeve 1) is inserted a reducing-nipple 0. Such nipple may also consist of a piece of tube of a size fittingthe bore of the sleeve 1). The function of such reducing-nipple is to reduce the interior or bore of the sleeve Z) to a size adapted to the shank d of the swiveling ring d. Such shank d is round and the extremity 61 thereof is split.
In putting the various devices comprised within my improved tip together the shank cl of the ring d is first inserted in the nipple c, and the split extremities thereof are spread or bent at right angles, so as to restrain the ring in place. The nipple is then fixed in placein the sleeve 19 by any convenient means, and the tip is ready for being inserted on the top end of the rod.
The head 0 of the nipple c is rounded, so as to provide a bearing-surface for the ring to swivel against, having as little friction contact as possible. Likewise to avoid unnecessary friction contact between the bearingsurfaces of the spread portions at the base of the shank d and the lower end of the nipple such lower end of the bore is slightly countersunk concentric with the bore of such nipple.
To avoid sharp edges against which the fishing-line may be scraped or out while playing out, the extremities of the sleeve 1) are rounded.
The utility of my invention is self-evident.
Having fully described my invention, now what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a tip for a fishing-rod, the combination of a sleeve, or tube, adapted to be affixed to the top end of the fishing-rod, and a guidering pivotally secured in the extremity of such sleeve, substantially as described.
2. As a tip for a fishing-rod, in combination a sleeve, 1), a reducing-nipple in the upper end of such sleeve, and the swiveling guidering, d, having'a shank pivotally secured in the nipple, the extremity of such shank being sp1it,and the split portions bent,or spread,
to restrain the shank in place, substantially otally secured in said nipple, the extremity In testimony whereof I have hereunto afof such shank being split, and the splitporfixed my signature, in the presence of two wittions bent, or spread, to restrain the shank nesses, this 12th day of February, 1901.
