Letters Patent No. 67,494, dated August 6, 1867.
IMPROED elle -tlgetlt marsh tu im their tttgtt @anni ant limiting part tt tigt stmt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, D. BRNETT, of Bedford Station, Westchester county, New York, have invented anew and improved Elevated Bedstead; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enablel others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the i i accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are detail sectional views, to be herein referred to.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l The object of this invention is to so arrange bedsteads in apartments where room is to be economiz'ed that the same may be completely concealedl during day-time and' whenever they are not used.
The invention consists in suspending the hedstead by means of ropes or cords frfomthe ceiling of the room in which they are arranged, the ropes passing over pulleys that are provided in the'ceilngs, so that by pulling the ropes thev bedstead may-be elevated to the ceiling and be fitted in a recess provided therein for its reception. Theb'edstead will then be wholly out of thewayi When to be used it can be easily let down to the loor or he suspendeddat a proper height above the same, as maywhe le'siggi Its underiilimay be inlgid with.. panels, and itssides provided with mouldings and decorations of any suitable description, so that when elevated the under side of the bed will forrn an ornamentA forthe' ceiling.V y
A represents a. bedstead of suitable construction. To its four corners are secured thc lower 4ends of wire or other ropes B, which pass'over pulleys a a that `are arranged in the ceiling Cof the roomin which the bedstead is placed. These ropes pass down through a partition or wall, D, and are wound upon a drum, E, which is hung in the said partition, and which is provided with a crank, b, so as to 'be wthlneasy reach. A ratchetwheel, c,'is mounted on the drum, and a pawl, d, is provided in the partition'` to engage in the vteeth of the ratchet-wheel, as is clearly shown in iig. 2, which is a crss-section of the drum. By turning the crank I the' bedstevad can be raised or lon-ered at will, and by the pawl d it will be retained Vin any position. Any other I device for operating the bedstead may be uppliedwith equal advantage, andvI do not confine myself to the use of any particular one of them. The head and foot-boards c e of the bedstead can be made tofold down, being hinged tothe vends of the bedstead, as shown. The legs F can bc-made to slide intoV the. corners of the bed 4sten-d. In the lattervare or may be provided tubes G G for the reception of the legs, said tubes being slotted,
asshown in iige3, which is a. side view of` a leg aud tube. A pin,f, en the leg,p asses through thel slot in the tube, in which side slots are formed, as shown, to hold the legs up-or down. Any other device for moving the legs may be used, or the Ilegs may be4 dispensed with altogether, as the bedstad can be suspended like ahammock. When the bedstead is elevated the legs, if there be any, should or may be concealed, while they are drawn out when the bedsrtead is lowered, as is shown hyrcd lines in lig. 1. The ceiling is Yprovided with a recess, into which the bedstea'd fits, when elevated; ample room is provided in this recess for the bedding, as shown. The under eide of the bed-bottom is paneled or'otherwisc ornnmcntcd, so that` it will decorate the ceiling when elevated. I
This invention will be of great value in ships, stores, land crowded buildings, and in all places where room is scarce, or where the bed is tofbc concealed, although it cannot be dispensed with. -l: am aware that sliding legs, in themsclves considered, are not new, and I doonotthercfore -claim them; but, having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'The combination oi a bedsteud, which can be raised or lowered by the devices substantially as described, with the slidings legs, as herein set forth for thel purpose specified.
, D. BRNETT.
