UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEF A. OHMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COLUMN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,304, dated May 14, 1901.
Application iiled October 20, 1900. Serial No. 33.707. (No model.)
To all whom vif may concer-nf:
Be it known that I, JOSEF A. OHMAN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Column, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in metal columns used in reproof buildings, and the object is to provide a comparatively light yet strong column, the sections of which may be readily formed by rolling.
I will describe a column embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the igures.
Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a column embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The column comprises two sections 5 6, each having outwardly-extending ianges 7 at its edges, and extended inward at the longitudinal center of each section is a web 8, the plane of the webs being at right angles to the plane of the sections. In the complete column plates 9 are placed against the opposite sides of the webs, and fastening-rivets l0 are passed through the plates and webs. When the sections are connected, the webs 8 meet at the center and, with the plates 9,'form a very rigid structure to withstand torsional strain.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent* A metal column, comprising two sections, each section having a longitudinally-extended web on its inner side, the plane. ot' the webs being at right angles to the plane of the sections, and plates secured to the opposite sides of said webs, the said webs being extended to the center ofthe plates, whereby the combined plates and webs form a practically solid center, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEF A. OHMAN.
