Be it known that I, HUGH BURT MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Stop Attachments for Dental Handpieces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being'had to the aunexed drawings, makinga part of this specilication, and lo the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a side elevation showing the different. parts properly assembled. Fig. 2 is a top view showing the dilferent parts properly connected. Figs. 3 and 4 are detached views ofthe connecting-screws. Fig. 5 isadetached View of the shield. the clutch-shifting bar or plate with its operating-handle. Fig. 7 is a detached perspective view of the clutch-shifting bar or plate. Fig. S is a view showing the shaft designed to be connected to the cable and to the shifting clutch, also showing screw-threaded disks for connecting the cablesleeve and the clutch retaining cylinder. The present invention has relation to a stop' attachment fordental handpieces; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of the present invention is to provide a means to instantaneously stop and start the rotation of the various kinds of tools designed to be connected to a dental handpiece without stopping the rotation of the cable and the sliding oriuterlacing clutch.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures of the drawings.

It will be understood that the handpiece or portion 1 is to be provided with the ordinary parts to con nect the various tools designed to be used or employed in various kinds of dental work in which a rotary motion is to be illustrated in Figs. 11 and 14; but it will be understood that the exact location of the blades or fingers 3 is immaterial, inasmuch as the object and purpose hereinafter described can be carried out without reference to the exact locationV of said blades or fingers.
The rear end or portion of the handpiece proper is provided with the screw-threaded portion Li, 'which screw-threaded portion is entered into the. screw-threaded recess 5, thereby connecting the clutch-cylinder 6 to the handpiece 1. Within the cylinder 6 is located the sliding clutch 7, said clutch being so formed that it will move back and forth freely, as hereinafter described.
The sliding clutch 7 is provided with the A.slot or kerf 8, which slot or kerf is for the purpose of receiving the fins or fingers 9, which tins or lingers are securely connected to the shaft 10, said shaft 10 being connected to an ordinary flexible rotatable shaft and power transmitted to the shaft l0 by means of the ordinary flexible shaft driven by an ordinary dental engine or from any other source of power.
For the purpose of holding the shaft'lO in proper position the screw-threaded disk 11 is provided, which screw-threaded disk is-connected to the cylinder 6, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
For the purpose of connecting the sleeve or casing surrounding the iiexible shaft the screwthreaded disk 12 is provided. The
flexible shaft and its sleeve are not illustrated, inasmuch as their construction is common and forms no particular part. of the present invention.
For the purpose of providing a means for allowing the sliding clutch '7 to be moved back and forth, as hereinafter described, within the cylinder 6 the slot or kerf 8 is formed of such a depth that the tins 9 will at no time be disconnected from said slot or kerf.
The sliding clutch 7 is provided with the annular groove 13, which annular groove is for the purpose of receiving` the pin or point 111,
located upon the bottom or under side'of thel cylinder 6, substantially as illustrated in Fig.`
10, and for t-he purpose of preventing any rocking movement of the sliding` plate 15 the cylinder 6 is provided with the fiat surface or portion 19.
For the purpose of providing a means for operating the sliding plate, which in turn imparts a reciprocating movement to the sliding clutch 7, the forward-extending bar or rod 2O is provided, which rod is pivotally connected to the sliding plate 15, as illustrated in the drawings, and is preferabl7 roughened upon its upper forward portion for the purpose of preventing the thumb or finger of the operator from slipping.
It will be understood that the bar or rod 2O should be formed light and may be bent from a single piece of Wire and the rear ends of the wire turned so as to be received in the apertures 21, formed in the edges of the sliding plate 17.
In use when it is desired to impart rotary motion to the tool placed in the handpiece the bar or rod 2O is moved forward, carrying with it the sliding plateA l5, which in turn moves the sliding clutch forward and brings the fingers 22 into engagement with the ns or fingers 3, located and connected to the shaft 2. When it is desiredv to stop rotary motion of the tool, the bar or rod 20is moved backward, thereby disengagin g the lingers 22 from the tins 3 and allowing the clutch 7 to rotate independent of the shaft 2, together with the different parts connected thereto.
For the purpose of protecting and covering the sliding plate 15 the cap 23 is provided,
which cap is located upon the lugs 18 and connected by means of suitable screws, such as 24.

In a stop attachment for dental hand-` pieces, the combination of a handpiece provided with a rotatable shaft, having connected thereto tins, a cylinder connected to the handpiece and having located therein a sliding clutch said sliding clutch provided with the annular groove and the slot 8, the sliding plate provided with recesses, lugs located upon the cylinder and in the grooves of the sliding plate, and a shaft provided with lingers located in the slot of the sliding` clutch,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of a handpiece, a cylinder connected thereto, a sliding-clutch located in the cylinder and a sliding plate connected to the cylinder, means for sliding the clutch with the plate, a bar pivot-ally connected to the sliding plate and provided with a roughened upper surface, and grooves located upon the edges of the sliding plate to receive the members of the rod or bar, and means for connecting the sliding clutch With the tool-shaft, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of a handpiece, a cylinder connected thereto, said cylinder provided with a flat or plain surface formed upon a portion of its periphery, lugs located upon the dat or plain surface, a sliding plate provided with open slots and the lugs located in the open slots, a pin or point connected to the sliding plate and adapted for engagement with an annular groove formed vupon the periphery of the sliding clutch and the sliding clutch located intermediate the power-shaft and the tool-shaft, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
