IlNiTnn l' STATES PATENT Fricr.
IIARRIT F. JONES, OF OAMDEN, NE'W JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD E. SMITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA;
DENTAL HANDPiECE.
SPECIFICATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,070, dated November 20, 1900.
Application filed August 22, 1900. Serial No. 27,690. @lo model.:
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. JoNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Angular Handpieces for Dental Instruments, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an improvement in dental handpieces in which the tool-holder is situated at an angle to the handpiece.
It further consists of means for adjusting the same.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents an elevation of a portion of a dental handpiece embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional View on line 0c a', Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of a portion of the device. Fig. e represents a sectional View on line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of a detached portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a dental handpiece having the grasping-handle B, with a rod O passing therethrough, to one end of which power is applied, the other end having thereon a gear D, said rod O passing through the projection or head E, having a shoulder F thereon and having a sleeve G attached thereto in any suitable man nerin the present instance by the screw-threads H-the end of said projection E and said sleeve forming a chamber J, in which is situated the said gear D.
The sleeve G is provided with a mouth K, formed by a walLwhich is at an angle to the said sleeve, having the inner Wall threaded, as at L, Which engages with screw-threads on a ring M, which is suitably secured to a tool-holder N, whereby the latter can turn on said ring, said tool-holder N having rigidly attached thereto a sleeve F', which is provided at its lower end with teeth P, which latter are adapted to be seated in the mouth K of the sleeve G.
Q designates an annular gear having teeth R on one end, said annular gear being adapted to be seated in the mouth K and said teeth R being adapted to mesh with the gear D on the rod O, the other end of said annular gear Q being provided with the teeth S, which project' into the interior of the tool-holde`r N and 55 mesh with the gear T on a sleeve U, which receives the tool V, which latter is held in position by the bar WV, said tool V having a flattened portion which engages with the said sleeve, so that the parts revolve together.
A' designates a collar which surrounds the sleeve G and is adapted to extend beyond the shoulder F on the extension E, leaving a chamber B', in which is adapted to be seated a spring O', which bears against the said shoulder F and the inner face of the collar A, said collar having a finger D/ attached thereto which projects through an opening E in the wall K of the mouth and at the proper time engages one of the teeth P on the sleeve F. A nut G' locks the tool and sleeve in position and forms a closure for the tool-holder N.
rlhe operation is as follows: The tool V is inserted in the tool-holder N and locked in position by the bar IV and engages with the sleeve U. Power is now applied to therod C, which gives motion to the gear D, and thence to the annular gear Q and to the gear T, mounted on the sleeve U, whereby motion is imparted to the tool V. The spring C tends to hold the finger Dl in engagement with one of the teeth P on the sleeve F. By forcing the collar, and with it the finger D', in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 the finger will be disengaged from the tooth P, with which it is engaged, and the toolholder N can be turned on the ring M and caused to occupy any desired position. By releasing the finger D the saine Will engage again one of the teeth P and the tool-holder will be locked in position.
'In Fig. l I have shown in dotted lines some of the positions that the tool may assume, and it will be apparent that the same can occupy other positions, it being noticed that the toolholder moves without reference to the annular gear Q, which is free and independent therefrom. I
It will be apparent that various slight changes can be made in the construction, and
IOO
I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance as herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a dental hand piece,a tool,a tool-holder, a grasping-handle having a mouth suitably connected therewith and a ring attached to said tool-holder upon which the latteris adapted to turn and having means for rigidly securing the same to the Walls of said mouth.
2. In a dental handpiece, a grasping-handle, a power-rod passing therethrough, a gear on said rod, an annular gear extending at right angles to said rod, teeth on one end thereof adapted to mesh with said gear on said rod, teeth on the other end thereof, a tube havinga gear adapted to mesh with the lastmentioned teeth on the said annular gear, a tool-holder, a sleeve secured to said toolholder having teeth thereon which are seated within said handpiece, and a spring-actuated finger adapted to engage the teeth on said sleeve.
3. In a dental handpiece, a grasping-han4 dle, a mouth, a tool-holder, a ring movablyr secured to said tool-holder and adapted to be rigidly secured to the Walls of said mouth, a sleeve secured to said tool-holder and having teeth thereon seated within said mouth, and a finger which is spring-actuated and adapted to pass through the Walls of said mouth and engage with said teeth.
4. In a dental handpiece, a grasping-handle, a lod passing therethrough to which power is applied, a gear on said rod, an annular gear extending at right angles to said rod and having teeth on one end adapted to mesh with said gear, and teeth on the opposite end which are adapted to mesh with a gear on a tool, a tool-holder, a :ring having screw-threads thereon movably attached to said tool-holder, a mouth, the walls of which are adapted to be engaged by said ring, and
a sleeve having teeth adapted tobe engaged by a finger to prevent rotation thereof.
5. In a dental handpiece, a tool, a too1- holder, a sleeve having teeth thereon rigidly secured to said tool-holder, a ring movably supported by said sleeve with respect to said tool-holder, whereby said tool-holder and sleeve can move independently of said ring.
6. In a dental handpiece, a grasping-han` dle, a mouth, a tool-holder, a tool, and means seated within said mouth and rigidly secured to said tool-holder which are adapted to be locked to prevent rotation of the parts.
7. In a dental handpiece, a tool, a toolL holder, a grasping-handle, a sleeve extending from the grasping-hand1e and having a mouth and a ring adapted to be rigidly secured to said sleeve and attached to said toolholder, whereby the latter can turn thereon.
8. In a dental handpiece, a tool, a toolholder, a ring serving to attach the toolholder to the sleeve extending from the grasping-handle, and a sleeve rigidly secured to the tool-holder and adapted to hold the said ring in position on the tool-holder.
9. In a dental handpiece, a tool, a toolholder, a grasping-handle having a mouth, a ring adapted to be rigidly secured to the walls of said mouth, and means, whereby said ring holds the tool-holder with respect to said mouth and permits the said holder to turn thereon.
10. In a dental handpiece, a tool, a toolholder, a graspinghandle having a mouth, a ring attached to said tool-holder upon which the latter is adapted to turn and having means for rigidly securing the same to the wall of said mouth, and means for locking said toolholder in various positions.
