To ALL WHOMYIT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, MARTIN DAItLlNG, of Blodgett's Mills, in the county of Cortland, and State of New,
York, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Gatherer; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a. full, clear, undexnct description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to'nnltc and use the some, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in uhich- Figure 1 is a. top view of my invention, in. which the edges of the cloth table are broken away from the hoop or frame to show its construction. 7
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken in the line a: z, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
In the accompanying drawings, A A is a. cloth table, which is placed under the tree for the fruit to fell upon without being bruised, and is held up from the ground by being stretched on s. bocp,-C, which is mounted on legs, and is constructed in two parts 0 C, so that by separating the two parts it may be adjusted to a. tree,
i the body of the tree being enclosed .in the centre d. Each part of the hoop has a QhOIll-PIGOQflTMNl these pieces ff fit to each other with dowel-pins e e for holding the hoop together when in use. Each half of the hoop is also cut transversely and united by hinges ii, fig. 1, so that when the two halves of the hoop arc separated,
they may be t'olded or doubled up and made to occupy less space for convenience of handling or stowage:
When in use the frame is supported at the joints or hinges z i by the side legs opposite the joints, but
hooks and staples may also be placed on the lower side of the hoop to give the joints increased stiffness, if
desired. To the logs G I nttabh ,edjustable or sliding extension legs g, which slide on the main logs G in guides h h, and are scoured at any'desired position by set-screws k 17:, and by means of these adjustable legs the cloth table A A is readily set even onuneven ground, or may be elevated .0 that a wagon can be driven under the chutes a a of the table, and the fruit deposited in the wagon-box, or the table can be lowered nearer to the ground, and the fruit run into baskets set on the ground, as desired. These tables are necessarily mode large,
and the folding hoop or frame adds much to convenience of. handling or stowage, when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, .and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A. cloth table and frame divided in two parts A G A G to facilitate its application and removal from the body of the tree, as herein described and for the purpose set forth.
2. cloth tablennd frame constructed in two parts A C A C and each port made to fold up by joints or hinges z i, substantially as herein shown and for the purpose described.
3. Also the extension legs g G, incombiustion with the fruit-gathering table A, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 1st day of May, 1861. V p
I MARTIN DARLING.
