Description

@uiten tatrs getest @ffice WILLIAM w, TAYLOR, 0E NEWARK. NEW JERSEY.
i Letters Patent No. 66,649,.dated July 9, 1857.
' IMPROVBD CARPET-STRETGHER.
To ALL WHOM 1T MAY coNcERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. TAYLOR, of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Carpet-Stretcherg and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of Ithis specification, in which- Figure is a. top view of my improved carpet-stretcher.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference kindicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved instrument by means of which a carpet may be stretched upon the door and held in place while the nails are being applied; and it consists in the combination of the Hoor-plate, toggle-levers, and tail-block'with each other; in-attaching the tail-block to the lever by means of an adjusting-screw and nut; in the-,combination of movable lever jaws with the Hoor-plate, and in the combination of thumb-screwsfwith the hoor-plate and movable lever-jaws; the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described. v
A is the Hoor-plate, which may be made of any desired or convenient size, and to the rear end of which are attached the ends of two parallel levers B, which should be of such a length as to reach a little more than halt` across the room, and which should be placecfat such a distance apart'as to receive the-lever C between them. rlhe levers B and C should have numerous holes formed through them, through which may be passed the pin or bolt D, by which they are pivoted to each other. To the ends of the lever C is attached a screw, E, screwing into the nut F, attached to the tail-block G. rlhe forward end of the door-plate A has two or more projections or arms a formed upon it, the forward ends of which are so formed as to act as stationary jaws to hold the carpet. To the sides of the' projections or arms a are attached ears H, to which are pivoted the levers I, the forward ends'of which are so formed as to act as movable jaws in connection with the stationary jaws, to hold the carpet while being stretched and nailed. J are thumb-screws, that 'pass through the rear ends of the levers I, so that their points may rest upon thc Hoor-plate A, holding the carpet securely clamped between the movable and stationary jaws.
In using the stretcher, itis laid upon the floor, with the jaws at the place where it is desired to drive the tacks. The pin D is then removed and the levers extended until the tail-block G rests against the wall of the room. If 'the holes in the levers B and C correspond, the pin D is inserted. If they do not correspond, the pin is inserted in the nearest holes, and the tail-block G so adjusted by means of the screw and nut E and F, that it may rest against the wall. The middle part of the stretcher is then raised, draw-ing the floor-plate A inward. The carpet is then inserted between the stationary and movablejaws, and `secured in place .by the thumb-screws J, and a slight pressure upon the4 middle part of the stretcher forces it down and holds the carpet in place while being nailed. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,v isf- 1. The combination of the floor-plate A, toggle-levers B and C, and tail-block G, with each other, substantially as herein .shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
412. Attaching the tail-block G to the lever C, by means ofathe adjusting-screwA E, and nut F, substantially as'herein shown and described and for Vthe purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the movable lever-jaws I with the arms or stationary jaws a', of the hoor-plate A, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose setforth.
4. The combination of the thumb-screws J with the movable lever-jaws I-and door-plate A, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purposeset forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 9th day of May, 1867.
WM. W. TAYLOR. Witnesses:
