JESSE WISMAN DAVIS AND VVILLlAM` SAMUEL DAVIS, OF ESSARY SPRINGS, TENNESSEE.
STIRRU P.
SPECIFICATION forming' part 0f Letters Patent NO. 665,884, dated January 15, 1901.
Application filed February 17, 1900. Serial No. 5,610. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JESSE WISMAN DAVIS and WILLIAM SAMUEL DAVIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Essary Springs, in
the county of Hardeman and State of Termessee, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Stirrups; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will 1o enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make Yand use the same. V
Our invention relates to improvements in stil-rups, more particularly for ladies ridingsaddles.
I5 It has for its object to greatly simplify construction, to reduce cost of manufacture, to provide for the ready liberation of the foot from the stirrup in an emergency or runaway, and to otherwise promote facility, convenzo ience, and utility.
It consists, primarily, of a stirrup, preferably made in a single piece, and of certain details of construction and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out in the claims. Y
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of our invention, Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a 3o vertical section. Fig. 3 is a View disclosing the blank thereof. Fig. 4 is a detached View ofthe preferably leather cover for the stirrup, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the stirrup with a cover thereon.
Latitude is allowed herein as to details, as
` they may be changed Without departing from the spirit of our invention,.and we therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the Scope of our invention.
4o In carrying out our invention we form or cut from some suitable metal of strong and malleable character in a single piece a blank l. Said blank is, preferably, of the general outline indicated in Fig. 3. It is bent or creased on a straight line 2, thus forming the front inclined portion or wall 3 and the lateral inclined inner portion or wall 4 of the stirrup, the otherwise outer Wall being dispensed with for the purpose, as heretofore indicated, to permit the ready liberation of the foot, especially in the event of an emergency.
It is next bent or creased also on straight lines at relatively opposite sides of the aforesaid line or crease, but at slightly less than right angles thereto, as at 5 6, respectively, thus 55 forming the bottom of the stirrup and said bottom of two lapping portions or thicknesses 7 8. One thickness of said bottom is bent on a straight line upward at the lower edge of the open side of said stirrup, thus providing 6o a narrow flange or strip 9. Also the front wall 3 of said stirrup ha's a downward-extending lateral strip 10, adapted to be suitably secured to the strip or fiange 9 aforesaid, thus serving to unite or connect the upper portion and bottom of the stirrup together. The bottom thicknesses 7 8 are also suitably secured or riveted together, as indicated, and the bottom, upon its inside, may be or may not be covered with leather, as desired. Also the 7o upper portion of the stirrup may be or may not be covered with leather, as preferred. The lateral wall 4t of the stirrup has an earlike tiange l] at its upper near edge, to and between which and the front wall 3 is suitably 75 p secured a rounded or cylindric stay or brace l2. This serves to strengthen or stay the stirrup at its extreme contracted upper edge, and
at this point a slot 12at is made in the lateral wall for conveniently attaching the suspend- 8o ing-strap (not shown) of the stirrup, connected to the saddle. If preferred, however, the entire upper portion of the stirrup may be com passed or inclosed by a preferably leather cover 13, made in a single piece and adapted to be readily secured in any suitable Way thereon. As shown, Said cover is provided in its upper contracted end portion with lateral slots 14 14, one adapted to register with the slot l2 in the lateral portion or wall 4 of 9o the stirrup and the other slot formed in the opposite side of said cover, providing for the passage therethrough also of the stirrup-suspending strap, said strap thus eecting the connection of said cover with and holding it upon the stirrup.
It will be seen that by reason of the aforesaid construction of stirrup simplicity is promoted, cost of manufacture reduced, and the foot of the rider is readily liberated from the Ioo stirrup in event of an emergency or runaway, as Will be readily understood.
Having thu's fully described our invention,
what we claim, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, s-
l. A riding-saddle stirrup having a lateral portion, a front portion, a bottom portion, comprising two lapping thicknesses, one having a lateral uptnrned flange, said front por? tion having a lateral edge flange connected to the aforesaid ange, substantially as set forth.
2. A stirrup of the character described, hav ing a lateral portion, a front portion and a bottom portion, said front portion having a rear edge lateral extension and said bottom having a lateral uptnrned flange secured to the aforesaid extension, said lateral portion having at its upper edge a ange, and a stay or brace held between the last-named ange JESSE WISMAN DAVIS. WILLAM SAMUEL DAVIS.
