SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,828, dated January 8, 1901. Application tiled November 4, 1899. Serial No. 735,800. (No specimens.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Jenn B. DHOMERGUE, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Linings'; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to linings, and has io special reference to such linings as are used for carpets, refrigeratorcars, cold -storage houses, dwellings, buildings, dto.

One object of my invention is to provide such a form of lining which will resist heat |5 or cold as well as one which will be a perfect non-conductor of sound for floors and walls; and a further object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple form of lining which will be easily and cheaply manufactured as zo well as one which will be air, dirt, and dust proof when in use.

A still further object of my invention is to provide such a form of lining that Will prevent the threads for securing the lining together from becoming Withdrawn in case they should become broken from any cause, as is the case in the ordinary linings Where chainstitching is used.

My invention consists, generally stated, in

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use the lining,I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top view of a portion of my 4o improved lining, showing the front, top, or one side of the saine broken away at one end. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the saine, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same.

Like numerals herein indicate like parts in each of the iigures of the drawings.

As illustrated in the drawings, l represents the lining, which is composed of the sheathing of paper 2 or other suitable material to form one face, the bottom, or back 3, and 4 5o represents the filling material of any Wellknown fiber, such as cotton, hair, duc. In the manufacture of my improved lining the sheet of paper 2 to form the face, bottom, or back 3 is cut to the required size and the 85 required amount of brous filling material 4- such as cotton, hair, &c.-is placed on the same. After this is accomplished the sides of the face, bottom, or back 3 can be bent or turned over onto the iilling material 4 to form 9o the side edges 5 thereon and grooves o, and suchv side edges 5 secured to said face, bottom, or back 3 and iilling material 4 by the threads 7, which pass through said face, bottom, or back 3, filling material 4, and through the ends of the side edges 5 to form the chainstitching on each side of the lining l. During this operation the tapes or strips 8 and 10 are placed along the length of the face, bottom, or back 3 and along the length of the roo surface of the filling material 4, and such tapes or strips '8 and l0 are secured to the bottom or back 3 and filling material 4 and to each other by means of the threads 9, which pass through the face, bottom, or back 3, filling material 4, and tapes or strips 8 and 10 to form the chain-stitching on each side of the lining 1. the opposite face, front, or top 13of the lining 1 having been cut to the required size can then be placed or secured to the lining 1 by pasting, gluing, or cementing the same to the tapes or strips 10 over the threads 9, forming the chain-stitching, and the side edges of said face, front, or top 13 can be pasted, glued, or cemented to the side edges 5 over the threads 7, forming the chain-stitching, When the lining 1 is ready for use.

It will thus be seen that my improved lining is cheap and simple in its construction of parts and process of manufacture. It can be easily and rapidly manufactured and is greatly strengthened by its peculiar construe;`

tion. It forms a completely-covered lining on its exposed parts and presents no openings or holes caused by stitching or sections, so rendering the same impervious to dirt, dust, and air, as Well as a perfect non-conductor of sound.

It will further be seen that the lining forms a perfect insulator, and the threads of the same forming the chain-stitching for securing the parts together will be prevented from becoming withdrawn when one of the threads is broken or fractured.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As a new article of manufact ure, a lining composed of a sheet to form one face, a filling material secured to said face at the side edges thereof, tapes or strips extending along said filling material and secured thereto by stitches passing through said tapes or strips, filling material and face, and an imperforate covering composed of a sheet secured over said tapes or strips and filling material to form the opposite face of the same.

2. 3. As a new article of manufacture, a lining composed of a sheet to form one face, a filling material secured to said face at the side edges thereof, tapes or strips extending along the iilli ng material and secured thereto by stitches passing through said tapes or strips, filling material and face, and a covering composed of a sheet extending over said tapes or strips and secured thereto to form the opposite face of said lining.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a lining composed of a sheet to form one face, a filling material secured to said face at the side edges thereof, tapes or strips extending along said filling material and secured thereto by stitches passing through said tapes or strips, illing material and face, and a covering composed of a sheet extending over said tapes or strips and secured thereto and to said side edges to form the opposite face of said lining.

5. Asa new article of manufacture, alining composed of a bottom or back,v a filling material secured to said bottom or back at the side edges thereof by stitches, tapes or strips extending along the filling material and secured thereto by stitches, tapes extending along the length of the bottom or back and secured thereto and to the filling material and tirst-named tapes or strips by stitches, and a covering secured over the stitches in the rstnamed tapes or strips and side edges by cementing, gluing or pasting the same to said tapes orstrips and side edges to form the front or top of the lining.

6. Asa new article of manufacture, a lining composed of a bottom or back having turned or bent side edges to form grooves, a filling material secured to said bottom or back and side edges by stitches passing through said bottom or back, grooves and side edges, tapes or strips extending along the filling material, tapes extending along the bottom or back and secured thereto and to said lling material and first-named tapes or strips by stitches, and a covering secured over the stitches in the first-named tapes or strips and side edges by cementing, gluing or pasting the same to said tapes or strips and side edges to form the front or top of the lining.
