Be it kn own'that I, Dr. WILLIAM W. BEACH, (if the city and State of New Yorh, have invented, made, and applied touse a certain new and useful Improvement in Mucilage-Brushes; and-I do hereby declare the 'following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being bad to the annexed drawing,

making part of this specification, wherein I have represented a vertical section of my mucilage-brush in a bottle of mucilage.

The object of my invention is to furnish a supply of mucilagc to the brush, so that it will not be necessary to dip it so-often in the bottle, and the brush itself will be more durable.

I make use of a hollow handle to thebrush having an opening into the centre of the hairs of the brush, and a hole over which the finger or thumb is placed to regulate the admission of the air and the consequent flow of the mucilage to the brush. I also make use of an elastic stopper surrounding the handle and acting to close the neck oftbe mucilage-bottle, and also to'regulate the extent of theimmersionof the brush in the mucilag e.

In the drawing a represents a mucilage-bottle of any desired size or shape. 6 is the handleof the brush 0. This handle 6. is to be' hollow. I prefer a glass tube, closed at the upper end, with the exception of a very small hole (at i) which allows thehandle to be exhausted of air by the mouth when it is desired to draw a large -amount of mucilage into the handle. To this hole the thumb or finger is applied, to regulate the admission of air and the consequent flow of the mucilage, whether a small or a large amount is contained in sziiid handle. The hairs or bristles forming the brush are to be entered within the lower end of the tube and secured by suitable cement, and a.v tube, 0, passes through said brush to allow the mucilage to run from the fountain into th brush. An elastic stopper or cover, 'e, is formed with a hole through which the handle 6 passes. This is to be placed in such a position on the handle as to suspend. the brush in the mucilage. The capillary attraction or the immersion of the lower end of the'fountain-handle will insure a supply of mucilage into the tubular'handle, but that supply may be increased by exhausting said tube as aforesaid.

I am well aware that fountain, paint, and marking-brushes have heretofore been made.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A mucilage-brush formedwith a tubular handle, into one end of which the brush is secured, and supplied with mucilage in the manner specified.

I also claim the elastic stopper or cover, fitted to slide upon the tubular handle, in combination with the brush and fountain, as and for the purposes specified.

I claim a tubular handle for a fountain-brush in which the hairs or bristles are entered within the lower end of such tube, and provided with a tube passing through said bristles, to allow the liquid or semi-liquid in the fountain to pass to the brush, as set forth.

I claim a mucilage or fountain-brush formed of glass tube composing the handle, an air-hole in the same, and a brushentered within or secured to the end of said glass tube, as set forth.
