I i '1 l wi iywww, ah-WW0? a i m i MmWM UNITED STATES PATENT ,rrrca TILI JIE CAMPBELL, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
SURGICAL OR OBSTETRIGAL PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 652,889, dated July 3, 1900.
Application filed April 16, 1900.
T0, on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIE CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Surgical or Obstetrical Pads; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improved pad which is especially designed for obstetrical and surgical operations.
It consists of a base having a surrounding hollow rim, means for supplying hot water to fill and warm the apparatus, a drainagecanal connecting with the front, and longitudinally-disposed seams with intermediate ridges which form independent drainagechannels to conduct away any liquid to. the drainage-canal.-
It also comprises details of construction,
which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawing.
Surgical and like pads are usually made with a surrounding rim, which is inflated with air, and a fiat intermediate base, and in some cases these devices have connected with them a conduit by which liquids may be conveyed away. The disadvantages of such devices as generally constructed are, first, that they must be inflated by mouth or pump, and, secondly, that they are cold, therefore causing a shock to the patient, which should be avoided. The 7 central part of the pad being in a single sheet, the water and fluids accumulating therein do not readily run down to the drainage-tube, but run around the body of the patient, wetting the clothing and in some cases theoperating-table or bed upon which the apparatus is placed.
It is the object of my in vent-ion to obviate these difficulties.
The rim A is of any suitable or desired shape and is provided with a nozzle 2, with which a pipe 3 is connected, leading to a fountain-bag 4 or equivalent source of supply, fromwhich hot water may be admitted, so as to fill the rim with the water, having a sufficient temperature to prevent any chill and to be comfortable to the body of the patient. The floor or bed 5 is also made double and has lines of seams or connection between the upper and lower part, as shown at 6. These Serial No. 13,044. (No model.)
lines extend from-rear to front or longitudinally of the apparatus, and after the rim has been inflated by the water the latter will flow into the spaces intermediate between the seams, thus forming raised ridges, which serve to direct any surface liquids to the lowest portion intermediate between them-that is, the lines of the scams.
7 indicates the inlet-passages opening from the rim A into the space between the upper and lower part of the central portion, so that the water can gradually enter and fill this portion, as before described.
The seams answer the double purpose of preventing the central part from rising up like a cushion and also as drainagechannels to facilitate the fluid running down into the single receiving portion 8, which communic'ates directly with the drainage-tube 9.
Two exit-passages 1Q serve to discharge the water from the pad whenever it is to be emptied, or when the water begins to get too cool it is gradually discharged directly into the drainage-tube and anew supply admitted from the fountain. The device can thus be kept in a suitably-warm condition for an operation occupying any length of time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a surgical pad of a .rim, capable of distention, a hot-water supply, and connections by which it is admitted into said rim, a base or floor interior to the rim formed in two attached parts, and connection by which water is admitted from the rim into the space between the two parts of the floor.
2. The combination in a surgical pad of a rim capable of distention, a source of water- :supply, and a pipe connecting it with the pad,
a floor. formed double and having longitudinal lines of connection whereby separate water-chambers are formed with intermediate depressions and connections between the exterior pad and said spaces whereby it is filled simultaneously with the filling of the pad.
3. The combination ina surgical pad of an exterior rim capable of distention, a source of hot-water supply, and a pipe connecting said source with the hollow rim, a floor or base interior to the interior periphery of the rim,
said floor being made double and havinglongiof hot-water supply and a pipe connecting it tudinally-eonnecting seams and a connection with the rim, whereby the latter and the floor between the pad and the interior of said floor may be filled with hot water, a drainage-canal 15 whereby the parts intermediate between the connecting with the pad and its floor and dis- 5 seams are filled with water and form ridges charge-passages openingfrom the rim directly with depressed channels along the lines of the into said channel.
seams. In witness whereof Ihave hereunto set my 4. The combination in a surgical pad of an hand. exterior rim, a floor interior to the rim made TILLIE CAMPBELL. 10 double and having the two parts connected Witnesses:
by parallel seams, connections between the GEO. H. STRONG,
rim and the interspaces of the floor, a source CHAS. W. TAYLOR.
