JOSEPH A. MAYERS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
GAS OR WATER SERVICE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. `651,51 1, dated June 12, 1900.
Application filed October 20, 1899. Serial No. 734,211. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jos'ERH A. MAYERs, a citizen of Great Britain, rcsidingat Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gas or Water Service Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of service-boxes for gas and water; and the objects of my invention are to provide a service-box ot` this class of superior construction and arrangement of parts, to so construct and arrange the parts of said device as to facilitate its adjustment with reference to the street or earth level, to combine inthe construction of said box materials which will admit of the same'being produced ata comparatively-low cost, and to produce other improvements which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the mannerillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a central-vertical section of my Fig. 2 is a viewin elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line sc @c of Fig. l.v
Similar numerals refer to similar p arts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ a service-box cap-section 1, which I produce of metal, this cap-section being adapted to be inserted in a ground excavation 'and having its lower end portion provided with laterallyprojecting horizontal base extensions 2. In
constructing the lower portion of the cap '1 I form the same with oppositely-located and recessed lateral projections 3. NVith' the inner side and upper portion of the cap-body 1 I form an inwardly-projecting lug 4t, the latter being provided with a threaded boit-hole which is adapted to receive a bo1t5, which passes through a metallic cap cover-plate 6. The remaining or lower portion of my improved service-box is preferably formed in two sections, as indicated at '7 and 8, the upper tubular section 7 being formed of a nonmetallic substance-such, for instance, as papier-mch, tiling, or other suitable inexpensive yet durable material. The head or upper end portion of the tubular section 7 is, as indicated more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, provided with oppositely-located laterali y-pro j ectin g lugs 9,which are designed to enter the correspondingly-shaped recesses of the lateral projections 3 of the cap. The section 7 is formed with internal screwthreads, as shown. The lower tubular section 8 of the box is externally threaded and of such size as to adapt it to be readily screwed into engagement with the section 7. This lower section 8 is also formed of a suitable and comparatively-inexpensive non-metallic material. In constructing the lower portion of the section S I form the same with oppositely -located laterallyprojecting vertical blades or wings 10, the latter serving by their engagement with the earth to prevent rotation ot said tubular section 8 while the section 7 is being screwed or adjusted thereon. I also form the lower end portion of the section 8 with oppositely-located end recesses or openings 1l, which permits of the passage therethrough of the horizontal gas or water service -pipe 12. As indicated in the drawings, the lower end portion of .the section 8 is designed to inclose the usual stop-cock or cutofi valve 13 ofthe pipe 12. 'It is obviousl that the weight of the earth or any other material which may be employed upon the lateral extensions 2 of the cap will serve to retain said cap in its proper position and that owing to the threaded connection of the upper and lower non-metallic sections 7.and 8 said parts maybe readily adjusted with reference to' each other, so that the lid or top plate 6 of the service-box cap may be' brought down 4flush Awith a street or walk surface, as maybe desired.
lthough I have shown the section 7 proi vided with the oppositely-projecting lugs 9 and the latter engaging recessed projections of the cap', it is obvious that the arrangement of these parts might be reversed, the recessed portion being produced in the head of the section '7 and the lugs which enter said recessed portions being formed with the capbody. It is also evident that instead of employing the sections 7 and 8 I might employ but one nonmetallic section, such as the section S, which may extend upward into the cap 1.
From the construction shown and described it will be seen that by forming the greater portion of the service-box of non-metallic and comparatively-inexpensive material said box may be produced in a substantial manner at a comparatively-low cost. It is also obvious that access to the valve may be attained by detaching,r the cap top plate G, which may be readily accomplished by unscrewing the bolt 5.
I do not herein claim a cap for a servicebox having a horizontal Flange or lateral projections atits lower portion, as such construction forms the subject-matter for a claim in my pending,r application filed May 7, 1900, Serial No. 15,777, foran improvementin serviceboxes for gas and water.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire ro secu re by Letters Patent, isn
l. In a service-box, the combination with a metallic cap l and a cover-plate dctachably connected therewith, said cap being provided with oppositely-located horizontal base extensions, of a lower tubular box-section ot' non-metallic material communicating with said cap, said lower section being provided with laterally-projecting base-Wings and oppositely-located base-recesses 1l, substantially as speciled.
2. In a service-box, the combination with a metallic cap portion and a detachable top plate therefor, said cap-body having oppositely-located recessed lateral projections 3, of a tubular section 7 having internal threads and laterally-projecting lugs 9 and a lower tubular externally-threaded section 8 adapted to adj nstably engage said section 7 substantially as specified.
l JOSEPH A. MAYERS. In presence 0f- A. L. PHELPS, C. C. SHEPHERD.
