SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,246, a1-,ed June 5, 1900. Application tiled November 13, 1899. Serial No. 736,829'. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LAMARY FIELDING HA- vENs, acitizen of the United States, residing at Enid, in the county of Garfield, Oklahoma Territory, have invented a new and Improved Incubator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved incubator arranged to prevent possible injury or undue crowding to hatched chickens, the incubator requiring no lamp or other similar heating device, and for convenient shipment the incubator is made in knockdown style to allow the recipient thereof to readily set up the incubator without the aid of skilled labor.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective View of the improvement with the Water-heating tank and filling-piece removed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the water-'tank. Fig. 3 is a vperspective View of the filling-piece, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the improvement on the line 4 4 in Fig. l.
' The improved incubator is provided with a box A, open at the top and having at the inside transverse partitions B B', connected With each other near the rear of the box by a longitudinal partition O, said partitions B, B',
and C extending at their top and bottom edgesa suitable distance from the top and bottom of the box, as is plainlyindicated in the drawings. The partitions B B' are nailed or otherwise secured to the front and rear of the box, while the partition C is similari y fastened to the partitions B B'.
On the lower ends of the transverse parti- 'tions B B are arranged transverse cleats or guideways B2 for a drawerD to slide on, said drawer having a compartment D' for receiving the eggs to be hatched and the chickens after being hatched, the forward end of said drawer being formed with a compartment D2, adapted to receive sand or similar material.
The compartments D D2 are separated from each other by a longitudinal partition D3.
Directly above the compartment D is arranged a water-heating tank E, preferably made of metal, a iilling-pipe E extending upwardly from the top of the tank to allow of filling thesame with hot water wheneverde-l sred. After filling the tank the'upper end of the pipe E' is closed by a suitable cap E2. A discharge-pipe E3 leads from the front lower end of the tank E and extends undera filling-piece F and through an opening A' in the front of the box. The outer end of the discharge-pipe E3 isnorin ally closed by a stop-k per E4; but when it is desired to empty the .tank of the water the stopper is removed to allow the water to flow out of the tank, and when the tank'is empty the stopper is replaced and the tank is refilled with hot water to give'the desired heat to the eggs in the compartment D' of the drawer D.
The upper end of the tank E is formed with an outwardly extending flange E5, adapted to rest on the upper ends of the pari titions B, B' and C, so that the tank is sus. pended in the box between the partitions B B and adjacent to the partition O. By this arrangement the bottom of the tank forms a top for the compartment D' of the drawer D touniformly heat the eggs and prevent the chickens from being injured when pulling the drawer out or from being unduly crowded. v
The filling-piece F is held between-the front end of the tank E and the front of the box A,
and the sides of said filling-piece rest on suit- I able pins attached to the partitions B B. This filling-piece is preferably covered on top by a sheet of paper F', extended up against the front of the box A and that of the tank E, to prevent the sand, sawdust, or other material filled into the box on the outside of the partitions on top of the tank and the lilling-piece from slipping down into the drawer D. It is understood that when the tank E and the drawer D are in position the remaining parts of the box are filled with sand, sawdust, or the like, so that the compartment D is protected against cold, and the heat radiating from the water-tank E is contained mainly in the compartment D to insure a proper hatching of the chickens'.
In using the incubator hot water is first filled into the tank E to heat the sand or other filling material as well as the drawer, and about twelve hours after the filling of the tank with water the eggs are placed in the drawer. From this time on either all oronly some of the water in the tank is replaced every day by hot water until the chickens are hatched. If desired, the hatched chickens may be placed on the sand on the top of the box, which is then used as a-brooder. In case the temperature in the egg-drawer becomes too low it is necessary to temporarily remove the drawer D and to place the same over a pan filled with sand and heated in a stove to about 115. By this arrangement the heat in the drawer is restored and the drawer is then replaced in the box. Vhile the drawer .is heated outside the box, as described, the tank E is refilled with hot water to restore the heat in the box before returningI the drawer.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new an d desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An incubator, comprisinga box, drawerguides in said box, a drawer arranged to slide in the box on said guides, and provided with a compartment for the eggs which is spaced from the box on all sides, a heatingo tank in said box above the drawer, the said box being filled with sand or the like on all sides of the drawer and heating-tank, and a filling-cap in the box above the drawer and between the egg-compartment of the latter 5 and the front ot' the box, whereby when the drawer is withdrawn from the box the sand will be prevented from dropping into the eggcompartment of the drawer, as set forth.
2. An incubator, comprising a box open at o the top and having transverse partitions extending from the frontot the box to the rear thereof, the top and bottom edges of the partitions being a distance away from the top and bottom ot' the box,a longitudinal partition connecting the transverse partitions with each other a dlstance from the rear of the box, a
p drawer for the box, and held to slide on guideways on said transverse partitions, the top ot' the drawer being a distance below the top edges of the partitions, a water-tank having` a iiange at its upper end to rest on said partitions and thereby suspend the tank in the box, the bottom of the tank beingdirectly over said drawer, and a filling-piece extending from one transverse partition to the other, 5 5
thereof, the top and bottom edges of the par- 6o titions being a distance away from the top and bottom ofthe box,a longitudinal partition con necting the transverse partitions with each other a distance from the rear of the box, a
drawer for the box, and held to slide on gnide- 65 ways on said transverse partitions, the top of the drawer being a distance below the top edges of the partitions, a watertank having a fiange at its upper end to rest on said partitions and thereby suspend the tank in the box, the bottom ot' the tank being directly over said drawer, said tank having an upwardly-disposed filling-pipe and a forwardlyextending discharge -pipe reaching to the outside of the -box, and a filling-piece be- 75 tween the front ot' the water-tank and the front of the box, the lilling-piece extending over the said discharge-pipe from one transverse partition to the other, substantially as shown and described.
