Be it known that I, ALFRED CURRIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture-Casters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in furniture-casters, and more especially to casters adapted to be attached to an article of furniture having tubular legs; and its object is to provide the same with means whereby it may be securely attached to the leg and readily detached therefrom, as occasion may require, and also to providemeans for properly protecting the bolt or stud whereby the caster may be attached and to provide the device with certain new and useful features, as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

My device consists, essentially, in the combination and arrangement of a suitable bolt or stud provided with means for securing the same within the axis of the tubular leg, in combination with a cap having a recess in its under side and secured to the leg by means of the bolt and a trackeplate having a suitable boss to engage the bolt and adapted to engage the rim of the cap and a caster attached to the track-plate and rotative thereon, as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a vertical vsection of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a detail showing a plan view of the upper side of the cap; Fig. 4, a detail showing the upper side of the track-plate; Fig. 5, a detail of the under side of the track-plate; Fig. G, the guide-ring for the rolls, and Fig.- 7 a detail of the yoke of the caster.

A represents a tubular leg of a` bed or other article of furniture, usually made of metal pipe.

B is a suit-able cap to close the lower end of the legA and provided with an annular Iiange B', surrounding the lower end of the leg and having a central screw-threaded opening B to engage the stud or bolt C, arranged in the axis of the leg A, extending downward therefrom and provided with means for fixing the same within the leg, saidA means consisting of a series of ribsor fins D, extendingin a curve tangentially from the bolt C outward toward the inner surface of the tubular legA and engaging the same, as shown in Fig. 2. The lower side of the cap B is recessed, as shown in Fig. 1, its rim extending below the end of the bolt C sufficient to protect the same and prevent it from coming in contact with the iioor when the caster is removed and allowing the bolt C to project within the recess of the cap sufficient to engage an upwardly-projecting screw-threaded boss E on the upper side of the track-plate E, whereby said plate is securely attached and held in contact with the under side of the cap B. The track-plate E has an annular track near its periphery traversed by the rolls G, which rolls consist of a series of disks arranged in vertical planes and in openings at intervals near the rim of a ring F, said ring being freely rotative around a downwardly-projecting boss E on the trackplate. The yoke I is provided with a corresponding track-plate H at its upper end engaging the rolls G and having a central opening K to receive the boss E, upon which boss the yoke is freely rotative and to which boss it is securely attached by means of an outwardly-turned ange. J is a caster-wheel journaled in the yoke I.

From the foregoing description the operation of my device will be readily understood. The fins D on the bolt C extend normally out- Ward slightly more than the radius of the interior of the tube A, and being tangential they will yield somewhat when forced into the tube, and thus securely hold the bolt C within the axis of the tube A and projecting downward therefrom. The cap B is securely held in place by the bolt C and at the same time furnishes -an eective protection to the projecting end of the bolt whenever the caster is detached therefrom and also furnishes a suitable finish to the end of the leg formed IOO by the tube A. .Thebolt C also Vfurnishes a secure fastening for attaching the track-plate E, wnlch when screwed upon the bolt and turned firmly against the rim of the4 cap B 5 will notl readily become detached. The rolls G turn freely in the recess in the guide-ring F and furnish a suitable .rolling bearing b'e` tween .the stationary track-plate E and the rotating track-plate H.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-g 1 1. The combination of a cap having a downwardly-projecting rim and adapted to be at- 15v tached to theleg of an article of furniture, a
