FOLDING RECEPTACLE.

To all whom it may concern.- I

Be it known that I, JOHN KILLINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wayne, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Receptacles, of which the following ,is a specification, refen ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to that class of folding boxes or analogous receptacles in which the contiguous folds or sections constituting the walls of the receptacle are united by means of relatively-arranged interlocking tongues and slits, my aim herein being to provide a receptacle of simple and efficient construction wherein a novel arrangement of the folds or sect-ions with effective locking means therefor shall be had and wherein also a suitable handle shall be afforded which shall coact with the folds or sections of the receptacle to insure their positive connection, all as will be hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the blank. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the completed box, one corner thereof being broken away to expose part-s otherwise concealed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4 40f Fig. 2. Fig. 5 isa perspective view of the box, showinga modified form of handle.

As illustrated in Fig. 1, the blank from which the box is constructed comprises a sheet of suitable material cutinto proper form and scored on the longitudinal lines a, b, c, and d to form the parallel folds or sections A, B, O, D, and E, respectively. The folds or sections A, B, C, and D are provided with end extensions or flaps A,B,C,andD',which at their junction with the said folds or sections are scored on the transverselinesee, respectively.

When the blank is folded into box form, the sections B and I) constitute the two sides of the box, the sections A and E the top of the box, the section 0 the bottom of the box, and the sections A, B, O, and D the ends of the box, as will hereinafter appear. The section E has formed in the body thereof a tongue 6, the base of which is scored, as at 6 so that it may be bent outwardly at right angles to said body, while the section A has formed Serial No. 708,314. therein a longitudinal slot at, through which the said tongue is adapted to be bent when the blank is folded into box form. This section A has also formed therein two suitablylocated tongues a preferably semicircular in form, while the contiguous section E has formed therein two corresponding slits 6 with which said tongues 01, are adapted to be engaged. The section B at one end of the blank has also cut therein a semicircular tongue Z), while the part D has formed therein a corresponding slit (1, with which said tongue I) is adapted to be interlocked when the blank is folded into shape. The section D at the opposite end of the blank has formed therein asimilar tongue b,while the adjacent section B has cut therein a coacting slit d.

The blank above described is adapted to be folded on the longitudinal lines a, 19,0, and d to constitute a rectangular casing, the section A being imposed on the section E and the tongue e being passed through the slot at in the former in a manner to lock the said sections securely together and at the same time serve as a substantial handle, whereby the box may be conveniently carried. The semicircular tongues a a in the upper section A are then pressed into the slits e e in the underlying section E, so as still more effectually to lock the adjoining parts together. Preferably the slot at is provided about the middle of its length with an offset,which constitutes a lug or teat a and the basal portion of the handle 6 is provided with a suitably-disposed slit 6 with which said lug or teat is adapted to register when the handle is drawn through the longitudinal slot. Thus a still more effective interlocking of the parts is insured. It will be observed that the tongues a a lie near the edge of the section Aand extend inwardly thereofthat is, their free ends are directed toward and at right angles to the basal or bent edge of said sectionand that therefore the load or contents of the box pressing against the interior side walls will tend to maintain the tongues and slits interlocked rather than to disengage them. I

The ends of the box are closed as follows: Atone end of the casing the flap A is bent inward and the flap G folded thereon. The flap D,with the slit therein, is then bent inward and the flap B folded upon it, the tongue in the latter flap being engaged with the adjacent slit, so as to lock the several adjoining end flaps in place. At the opposite end of the casing the flaps A and O are folded similarly to the corresponding flaps at the other end. The flap B, with the slit therein, is then bent inward and the flap D' bent upon it, the tongue in the latter being engaged with the slit in flap B. The tongues in the end flaps B and D, similarly to the tongues in the top fold A, are directed toward and at right angles to the basal or bent edges of said flaps, so as to tend more positively to remain interlocked with their respective slits when the box is filled.

In Fig. 5 a slight modification is shown. In this construction a separate handle is employed, the same comprising a strip E, of suitable flexible material, having enlarged extremities E which are inserted through suitably-located T-shaped slits E in the underlying top fold E and interlocked therewith, as shown, the body of the strip when in use being curved upwardly and extended through an appropriate longitudinal slot A" in the body of the exterior top fold A, as seen, thereby serving to lock said top folds securely together similarly to the. integral handle above described. Normally the strip E lies flatagainst the fold E of the box, but is drawn upwardly through slot A when it is desired to use the same.

I may add that the shape, pattern, or kind of receptacle in which my hereinbefore-d'escribed improvements are embodied may be changed or altered to meet particular requirements without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim- 1. A receptacle whereof the top comprises overlapping folds or sections, the upper fold or section being provided with a longitudinal slot or opening and the under fold or section having formed integrally therewith a tongue which extends through said slot or opening and aifords a suitable handle, substantially as described.

2. A receptacle whereof the top comprises overlapping folds or sections, the upper fold or section being provided with a longitudinal slot or opening and with locking-tongues, and the under fold or section being provided with a handle which extends through said slot or opening, and with slits with which said tongues are adapted to be engaged, substantially as described.

3. A receptacle whereof the top comprises overlapping folds or sections, the upper fold or section being provided with-a longitudinal slot or opening and the under fold or section having formed integrally therewith a tongue which extends through said slot or opening and affords a suitable handle, the said upper fold or section and the tongue being provided with an interlocking portion at the base of the tongue, substantially as described.

4. A receptacle whereof the top comprises overlapping folds or sect-ions, the upper fold or section being provided with a longitudinal slot or opening having an offset portion to constitute a lug or teat, and the under fold or section having formed integrally therewith a tongue which extends through said slot or opening and affords a suitable handle, the said tongue being provided at its base with a slit with which said lug or teat is adapted to engage, substantially as described.
