FILLING CHANGING MECHANISM FOR LODMS. (Application filed. June '23, 1900.
(NI: Model.)
I Mafia; I dwzud @QQ/g Bg EIMZS%WSW@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD S. STIMPSON, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE DRAPER COMPANY, OF. SAME PLACE AND PORTLAND, MAINE.
FILLING-CHANGING ME CHANISM FOR 'LOOMS.
ePEUIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,324, dated September 18, 1900.
Application filed June 28, 1900. Serial No. 21,264; (No model.)
To all whom it may concern" Be it known that I, EDWARD S. STIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-Changing Mechanism for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings rep to resenting like parts.
In United States Patent No. 627,803, dated June 27, 1899, an automatic mechanism is shown for automatically changing the filling in a loom, the filling-carriers being mounted in a feeder which is moved intermittingly by or through a strong spring to bring the fillingcarriers singly into operative position for transfer, the lay operating to set the spring.
My present invention relates to fillingzo changing mechanism of this general type; but herein the feeder-actuating spring is set by or through the operation of the transferrer, and I have provided a novel construction and arrangementof the parts foractuating the feeder. I have also provided-means for positively efiecting engagement of the actuating pawl with a cooperating ratchet attached to the feeder when said pawl is retracted.
Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of a loom provided with filling-changin g mechanism embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof on the line a; at, Fig. 1, looking toward the right.
3 5 The loom-frame A, lay A breast-beam A bunter C the filling-changing mechanism, comprising, essentially, connected disks a a to support the filling-carriers I), (see dotted lines, Fig. 1,) the stud a fixed on the stand a 40 on which the disks rotate, and the ratchet wheel or teeth a", attached to the hub of the disk or, and the transferrer f, may be and are substantially as shown in the patent referred to, the disks constituting a filling-feeder,
as it will be hereinafter termed.
The foot of the stand a is shown as provided with a horizontal hub or bearing a through which is extended a stud f, projecting beyond the hub at each end and held from set-screw 2.
movement therein by-suitable means, as a The transferrer ismounted to rock on the stud between the disks, and a spring 3, surrounding the stud, is attached at one end to the transferrer and at its otherend to a cap 3, suitably pinned or otherwise secured to the stud, the spring tending to lift the transferrer into'normal position, as shown in the drawings. The controlling mechanism for the transferrer, including the dog m", governed as to its position by the rock-shaft d and intervening connections, may be and is substantially as shown in United States Patent No. 628,228, dated July at, 1899 At the other end of the stud f I have mounted the hub h of a pawl-carrier it, having pivotally connected therewith, as; at 4:, Fig. 2, an upturned pawl h adapted to cooperate with the ratchet a, one end of the strong spring S being connected with the pawl-carrier, the other end of the spring being secured to a cap 6, fastened on the stud, the tendency of the spring being to rock the pawl-carrier in the direction of the arrow 25, Fig. 2.
. The spring Sis the feeder-actuating spring and it is wound or set by retraction of the pawl-carrier in the direction opposite to the arrow 25.
The hub it has secured to or forming part of it a longitudinally-extended ear k which projects over an oppositely-extended lug f secured to the hub of the transferrer, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
When the transferrer is moved in a downward direction to transfer the filling-carrier then in operative position from the feeder to the shuttle, the lug f will be lifted and it acting upon the ear 77, depresses or retracts the pawlcarrier h, winding or setting the feeder-actuating spring S and moving the pawl h into position to engage a fresh tooth go on the ratchet a When the transferrer returns to its normal position, the spring S 0perates through the pawl-carrier and pawl to effect a partial rotation of the feeder sufficient to bring the next filling-carrier into operative position, as in the patents hereinbefore referred to.
It will'be noted that the pawl-carrier is in this invention mounted adjacent the transferrer, the fulcra of the transferrer and pawlcarrier being in alinement.
The mechanism is very simple, strong, and durable, and the feeder-actuating spring is mounted exteriorly to the feeder, Where it may be easily reached for repairs or adjustment. In order to insure the engagement of the pawl with the ratchet when the pawl-carrier is retracted, I have provided a cam to act thereupon, said cam being herein shown as a lug m mounted on the inner face of the stand a and adapted to engage a shoulder h on the inner side of the pawl, the cam by such engagement positively moving the pawl toward and into operative position relative to the ratchet. The detent-pawl (Z of suitable construction is provided to cooperate with the ratchet and prevent retrograde movement of the filling-feeder.
Having fully described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A movable filling-feeder to hold a series of filling-carriers, means to intermittingly actuate the feeder, including a pawl, and a cam to engage the pawl when retracted and positively move it into operative position.
2. A movable filling-feeder to hold a series of fillingcarriers, an attached ratchet, means, including a pawl and a pawl-carrier, to inter mittingly actuate the feeder, and a cam to engage the pawl upon retractive movement of the pawl-carrier and positively effect eugagement of the pawl with the ratchet.
3. A rotatable filling-feeder, an attached ratchet, a pawl-carrier fnlcrumed eccentric to the axis of the feeder and having a pawl to cooperate with the ratchet, to intermittingly rotate the feeder, an actuating-spring for the latter, set by retraction of the pawlcarrier, a transferrer, and means controlled by operation thereof to retract the pawl-carr1er.
4. A rotatable filling-feeder, an attached ratchet, a cooperating spring-actuated pawl, to efifect intermitting rotation of the feeder, a transferrer, means contrplled by its operation to retract the pawl, and a cam to engage the pawl when retracted and positively eifect its cooperation with the ratchet.
5. A rotatable filling-feeder, an attached ratchet, a cooperating pawl, its pawl-carrier, a transferrer, the fulcra of said pawl-carrier and transferrer being in alinement with each other, a feeder-actuating spring set by retraction of the pawl-carrier, and means controlled by operation of the transferrer to retract the pawl-carrier.
6. A rotatable filling-feeder, an attached ratchet, a cooperating pawl, its pawl-carrier, a transferrer, a fixed fulcrum -stud upon which said transferrer and pawl-carrier are mounted to rock, a feeder-actuating spring set by retraction of the pawl-carrier, and connections between the latter and the transferrer, to retract the pawl-carrier when the transferrer is operated. I
7. A rotatable filling-feeder, an attached ratchet, a spring-actuated pawl-carrier, a pawl pivotally mounted thereon to cooperate with the ratchet, means to retract the pawlcarrier, and a fixed cam in the path of the pawl when retracted, to positively elfect its codperation with the ratchet.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD S. STIMPSON.
