ERIC 7. PALMQUIST, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE SHIOKLE,
HARRISON & HOWVARD IRON COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BODY-BOLSTER FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,746, dated September 1 1, 1900.
Application filed June 4. 1900. Serial No. 18.924. lNo model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERIC W. PALMQUIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Body-l3olsters for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a cast body-bolster for railway-cars which is of U shape in transverse section, the sides of the bolster being tied together at top byintegral webs, the upper faces of which are flush with the top edges of the sides, my object being to provide a body-bolster of this shape that will be neat in appearance, as well as strong and durable.
My invention consists in features of novelty 2o hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a top or plan View of myimproved body-bolster. Fig. II is a bottom view. Fig. III is a view part in side elevation and part in vertical section. Fig. IV is a vertical transverse section taken on line IV IV, Fig. III.
The bolster has sides 2, a bottom 3, and outwardly-extending horizontal flanges 4 at the upper edges of the sides. The bottom extends upwardly in both directions from the ce'nter, and itis provided with a center bearing 5 and side bearings 6, the latter being located on the sloping surfaces of the bottom. The. bottom is formed with openings 7 to lighten the article.
The bolster is open at top except for integral webs 8, that tie the sides of the bolster together and which form rests for the trussrod stands, one of which is shown in dotted lines, Fig. III. The upper faces of these webs 40 are flush with the top edges of the bolster and with the upper faces of the flanges 4, the Whole making a strong and durable bolster wherein the requisite amount of strength is combined with minimum weight. The webs 8 and flanges 4 provide firm supports for the truss-rod stands, and the flanges provide firm supports for the timbers of the car-body.
I claim as my invention- 1. A cast body-bolster for railway-cars consisting of sides having horizontally-extending flanges, a bottom provided with center and side bearings, and webs that tie the sides together at the top, all formed integral, substantially as set forth.
2. A cast body-bolster for railway-cars consisting of sides having horizontally-extending flanges at their tops, a bottom inclined upwardly each Way from the center and having center and side bearings, and webs that tie the ()0 sides together at the top, all formed integral, substantially as set forth.
3. A cast body-bolster for railway-cars having a bottom and sides and provided with integral webs flush with the top edges of the 65 sides and which tie the sides together and form supports for the truss-rod stands, substantially as set forth.
ERIC W. PALMQUIST.
In presence of-- GEO. G. FLOYD, AUBREY EDDIE.
