Description

Patented Aug. l4, I900. P. EBNER.
FIRE SHUTTER.
2 INVENTOI'? A TTORNE) FIRE-SHUTTER.
PETER EBNER, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 655,965, dated August 14, 1900.
Application filed December 4, 1899. Serial No. 739,133. (No model.)
is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of that class of fire-shutters which consists of jointly-connected or hinged metallic strips;
and the objects of my invention are to pro Vide an improved fire-shutter of this class of superior construction and arrangement of parts; to so construct and connectthesections of the shutter as to impart a desirable flexibility theretoand admit of the body of the shutter being readily and easily rolled into a compact bodyhaving a comparativelysmall diameter; to provide improvements in the construction of my improved shutter whereby the joining or hinging of the adjoining sections is accomplished without leaving openings for the entrance of water or snow, and to so join said sections as to impart to the former an outer shutter-surface which will not collect Water. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a view in perspective of a portion of a fire-shutter having my improved construction.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts.
1 represents the parallel transverse metallic strips of which my improved shutter is formed. As indicated in the drawing, the body of each of these strips, or the central and greater portion thereof, is of a concavo convex form, the outer surfaces of said strips or those surfaces which are disclosed from the outer side of the building on which the shutter might be used being shown in the drawing. The upper edge portion of each of said strips is throughout its length provided with an outturned hook-bend which terminates in a comparatiVely-small upward and inward tubular roll 2, this roll being formed, as shown, on the outer portion of said strip edge. The lower side or edge portion of each of the strips 1 is, as indicated in the drawing, provided throughout its length with an outwardly-bent and at the same time slightly-inclined longitudinal hook portion 3. As indicated in the drawing, the rounded seat or channel formed by the production of the hook portion 3 is adapted to have inserted therein and form a hinge-seat for the smaller top edge roll 2 of the adjoining strip 1. It will be observed that although the roll 2 is of smaller diameter than the roll 3 the outwardly-bent section edge portion on which said roll is formed is of sufficient depth or width to insure a proper alinement ofthe inner surfaces of the sections when the same are jointedly connected in the manner heretofore described. 7
From the construction which I have described it will readily be seen that although the manner of jointedly connecting the sections is exceedingly simple the same are so hinged in connection with each other as to impart a flexibility thereto and admit of a rolling operation thereof which is greatly to be desired in rolling fire-shutters, desk-tops, or other constructions employing jointedlyconnected sections. It will also be observed that by the nature of the joint herein formed between the sections no openings are left for the entrance of rain or snow and that owing to the slight downward inclination of the lower hin ge-hook terminations 3 the latter are so shaped as to readily shed rain and prevent a lodginent of water thereon.
It is obvious that the concavo-convex body portions of my improved sections may be corrugated or the surfaces thereof otherwise changed in outline.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fire-shutter comprising a plurality of oblong metallic sections, the upper edge of each of said sections being provided with an outturned portion terminating in a roll parallel with the direction of the length of the section and the lower edge portion thereof having an outwardly-projecting and downwardly-inclined hook portion adapted to receive and form a hinge-seat for the edge roll 2 of an adjoining section, substantially as specified.
2. A fire-shutter construction comprising a plurality of oblong metallic sections 1, the
bodies thereof being of a concavo-convex tion being downwardly inclined, substanform as described and each of said sections tially as specified.
bein provided with an ontturnedupper 1 edge portion terminating in a hinge-r011 2 and PE PER '5 an outtnrned lower edge hook portion 3 adapt- I In presence ofed to receive and form a hinge-seat for the O. C. SHEPHERD, roll 2 of an adjoining section, said hook por- I A. L. PHELPS.
