-padlocks, one object ofthe invention being UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALAN ROBB FERGUSSON, OE NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE FERGUSSON LOOK COMPANY, OF NEW' JERSEY.
PADLocK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,956, dated February 20, 1900.
Application tiled May 31, 1899. Y
T0 all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, ALAN ROBE FERGUssoN, a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks; and I do hereby declare the 'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
My invention relates to an improvement in to provide a padlock which will dispense with the use of a hasp.
A further object is to provide a padlock which will be extremely simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, neat in appearance, strong and durable, and most-eifectual when in use.
With :these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation with part of the casin g removed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the tumbler B removed. Fig. 3 is a view in section, and Figs. 4.- and 5 are detail views.
A A represent a door and jamb, respectively, or two doors or gates, to be locked together, and 1 1 represent eyeboltsfor staples secured to the parts to be locked and adapted to receive the shackles 2 2 of my improved padlock.
My improved padlock is provided with a preferably-rectangular casing 3,provided centrally with a fixed arbor 4,secured in the faceplates of thecasing. The casing is provided at diagonally-opposite corners with parallel cars 5, between which the shackles 2 are pivoted by means of pins 7,passing through said ears and shackle. Each shackle 2 is provided on its pivoted end with an arm 8,which projects through the side of the casing and is cut away or contracted, as shown at 9, for a purpose more fully hereinafter explained. A tumbler B is loosely mounted on the arbor 4, and a spring l1 is coiled around said arbor and secured thereto at one end and at the other end to the tumbler B. The tumbler B Serial No. 718,871. (No model.)
comprises a circular disk 10, provided with a peripheral flange 10, the outer convex face of which is provided with a series of peculiarly-arranged projections l2,similar in number and shape to a series of holes or cut-out portions 13 in my improved key 14, the latter being made concavo-convex in cross-section to lie flat on the liange l()a of the tumbler. The projections 12 on the tumbler constitute, in effect, a segmental rack with which the key meshes when moved tangentially thereto for the purpose of rotating the tumbler. A projection eis also provided on the periphery of the tumbler, against which the end of the key 14 abuis. The tumbler B is provided on its side with pins 15, which enter holes or openings 16 in locking-arms 17 ,loosely mounted on the arbor. The casing is provided with suitable pins or stops 18 to limit the movement of the locking-arms.
Springs a are secured to the casing ot and bear, respectively, against pins b, provided on the arms 8 of the shackles, so that when the padlock is unlocked the springs a will throw the shackles to their open position.
A keyhole c is provided in the casing A, and ablock or plate d .is secured in the casing to form one side of a keyway and guide the key in its movements with respect to the periphery of the tumbler B. Y
The operation of my improved padlock is as follows: When the padlock is locked, the parts will have assumed the positions shown in Fig. l. It will thus be seen that the outer ends of the locking-arms 17 will bear, respectively, against the inwardly-projecting arms 8 on the shackles, and hence prevent any possibility of the lock being accidentally opened. W'hen it is desired to open the padlock, the key le'is inserted to revolve the tumbler B and locking-arms 17, and hence move the arms 17 away from the arms 8 onthe ends of the shackles and permit the springs a, to force the shackles open. It will be observed, as heretofore mentioned, that the arms 8 are contracted, and hence are sufficiently narrow to pass the tumbler B, when the arms 8 are released by the locking-arms. After the padlock is unlocked the key can be withdrawn and the shackles locked by the spring action of the tumbler B without the aid of the key.
IOO
I would have it understood that I may construct my improved padlock with only one shackle, if desired, as the padlock will operate equally well with only one shackle for all purposes for which padlocks are now employed. A
Various slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A padlock comprising a casing, a shackle pivoted thereto, an arm projecting into the casing from the pivoted end of the shackle, a tumbler having a rack, a locking-arm movable with the tumbler, and adapted to engage the shackle-arm, and a key movable tangentially to the tumbler and adapted to coperate with the rack thereon to rotate said tumbler and move the locking-arm out of line with the shackle-arm, substantially as set forth.
2. A padlock comprising a casing, two
shackles pivoted independently thereto and each provided with an arm projecting into the casing, a shaft mounted in the casing, locking-arms projecting in opposite directions from said shaft and coperating with the shackle-arms to retain the shackles locked, a tumbler on said shaft and adapted to rotate said arms, a rack on the tumbler and a key adapted to engage said rack to rotate the tumbler.
3. In a padlock, the combination with a casing, a shackle pivoted thereto and an arm projecting from said shackle and entering the casing, of a revoluble tumbler mounted in the casing, a coiled spring disposed Within the tumbler for rotating said tumbler in one direction, an arm movable with the tumbler, said arm cooperating with the shackle-arm to normally lock the shackle, peripheral projections on the tumbler and a key adapted to mesh with said peripheral projections to rotate the tumbler.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALAN RO BB FERGUSSON.
