Description

UNITED STATES PAT NT ()FFICE.
JAMES I. SLOAN, or KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
ovEN FOR GAS OR GASOLENE GSTOVIESE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 643,916, dated February 20, 1906.
Application filed August 29, 1898. Serial No. 689,799. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES I. SLOAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotte, in the State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ovens for Gas or Gasolene Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ovens for gas and gasolene stoves, having more particular reference to an oven designed to be set over the flame of an ordinary gas or gasolene burner.
In the use of a gas or gasolene stove it is frequently very desirable to have some arrangement or device by which a small baking, such as a pie or a small pan of biscuits, may be quickly baked without taking the time or consuming the gas necessary to heat the regular oven, thus economizing both time and fuel, and in those stoves which are not provided with a regular oven such device to bake over the ordinary burner is particularly desirable. To attain this object is the object of my invention, to accomplish which object my invention consists of certain features of novelty hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I represents an isometric view of my improved oven, partly broken away to give a View of the interior construction. Fig. II represents a cross-section on the line 0c of Fig. I.
Similar numerals represent similar parts throughout both views.
1 represents a ring supporting by the brackets 2 the cone-shaped protector 3. A strap 4=BXi36I1 1S across said protector, having its ends secured thereto by overlapping the edge of the same. On said strap is carried a plate 5 of somewhat-smaller diameter than the protector, strengthened at its central portion by the smaller intermediate plate 6. To further strengthen and make substantial said plate 5, a bracket 7 is interposed, resting upon the protector and supporting said plate. 8 represents a sheet of woven wire arranged over said plate 5, having its edges secured over the outer edge of the protector and pro vided at its center with an opening surrounded by a ring 9, about which the broken ends of the wire are secured.
10 represents a casing of suflicient diameter to pass easily over the ring 1 and having an inturned upper edge 11. 12 represents an outer cover placed upon said casing, provided near its center with the draft-opening 13.
14 represents a ring or collar arranged to engage the inturned upper edge of the casing 10. An inner cover 16 bears against said col lar 14, provided with draft-openings near its outer edge, and a bolt 17, passing through the handles 18 and through the outer and inner covers, holds the parts securely in place.
19 represents a truncated-cone-shaped defiector and distributer placed immediately over the burner 19 under the protector-plate 3 and provided with an opening 20. Now when the device is placed over a gas or gasolene burner for baking the distributer 19 deflects and distributes the heat, heating the interior of the casing quickly and evenly throughout, the double top formed by the inner and outer covers preventing too-rapid escape of the heat by radiation, while the draft-openings therein provide for sufficient draft. The pan containing the pie, biscuit, or other viand to be baked is placed upon the sheet of wire, and the wire' being by the ring raised somewhat off the plate 5 the contents of the pan are prevented from burning on the bottom. Such burning on the bottom is also further prevented by the arrangement and location of the protecting-plate 3,which tends to disseminate and prevent too-great concentration of the heat on the plate 5. Thus is provided an oven which can be quickly heated and the baking done in practically the time and with practically the gas or gasolene required to heat the regular oven preparatory to baking, thus greatly economizing time and expense.
Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an oven for gas and gasolene stoves, a casing open at both ends and having an inturned flange around its upper edge, a collar arranged to engage said flange, an inner cover having draft-openings near its periphery arranged to engage said collar, an outer cover having draft-openings near its center arranged over said casing, and means for securing said outer to said inner cover, substantially as set forth.
2. In an oven for gas and gasolene stoves, a casing open at both ends and having an inturned flange around its upper edge, a collar arranged to engage said flange, an inner cover having draft-openings nearits outer edge arranged to engage said collar, an outer cover having draft openings near its center arranged over said casing, a pair of handles set at right angles to each other upon said outer cover, and a bolt passing through said handles and through said outer and inner covers and provided with a nut for binding said parts together substantially as set forth.
An oven for gas and gasolene stoves consisting of the combination with a casing open at both ends and having an inturned flange around its upper edge, a collar arranged to engage said flange, an inner cover having draft-openings near its outer edge arranged to engage said collar, an outer cover having draft-openings near its center arranged over said casing, and means for securing together said outer and inner covers, of a ring of smaller diameter than the casing arranged within the same, a cone-shaped protector carried on said ring, a bracket mounted in said protector, a plate of smaller diameter than said protector carried on said bracket, asheet of woven Wire arranged over said plate secured at its outer edge upon said protector and provided with a central opening, and a ring surrounding said opening arranged to elevate said Wire off of said plate, substantially as set forth.
JAMES I. SLOAN.
