BOOK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 647,517, dated April 17, 1900.
Application filed April 14, 1899.
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN BERTRAM PIKE, a citizen of the United States,-residing at Pike Station, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to book-holders, and has more particular reference to a device of this class whereby a note-book may be securely held in position while receivinga written record and conveniently supported while the record is read therefrom and may serve as a cover therefor.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like lettors of reference denote like parts in the several views and in which- Figure l is a plan viewof a note-book holder constructed according to my invention and in extended position, adapting it for use in holding a note-book upon which-a record is to be written; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2 with the parts in such position as shall adapt the holder to support a note-book from which a record is to be read; and Fig. 4:, a side view of a note-book holder with the parts folded together as a cover, inclosing the notebook and fastened in positions Referring more particularly to the draw ings, my note-book holder is provided with a body portion consisting of twom'embers aa, preferably smooth unbrokenoblong wooden strips, which are hinged togetherat one edge by a leather strip 1). j
Each of the members or a is provided at the end opposite the hinged edge with a U -shaped spring-clip c, the ends of which are secured in the corresponding strip a, and the clips 0 normally project inwardly of the strip a. At the same end of each strip aas that to which the clip '0 is secured and upon each side of each strip a are arranged inwardly-projecting supplemental U-shaped spring-clips, respectively d and e. The end clips at are preferably longer than the side clips 6, and the $erial No. 712,995. (No model.)
ends of the clips (1 and c are secured in the corresponding strips on a.
To the back of one of the strips or is secured a flexible strip or band f, secured thereto by pins or screws, as at g, and the other strip a is provided at its outer end adjacent to the corresponding clip a with a slit or opening 72., (shown in Figs. 2 and 3,) through which the strip f may be passed.
A small strip of flexible sheet metal j is secured, by means of screws 7t", to the strip a, which is provided with the slit h and adjacent thereto and provided with serrations or teeth Z upon its outer edge, which teeth are adapted to bear operatively upon the strip f and normally prevent the passage thereof in one direction through the slit h.
The back of the strip a, to which the end of the stripfis secured, is provided at one end with a button 0, and the strip f is provided with a slit 1;, and with the parts of the book-holder in the position shown in Fig. 4: the strip f may be drawn about the backs of the strips or and button 0 passed through the slit p, fastening the parts together, the strips on operating as closed covers for the notebook between them.
It is evident that the covers m of a notebook (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1) may be slipped at the ends between the clips 0 c and the body-strips a a and be held firmly in place. The clips at and 6 may be brought to bear upon the leaves a of the note-book and hold them in open position.
The clips d and e are preferably formed with less elasticity than the strips 0, being, as shown in the drawings, composed of finer wire, and whereas the covers m are securely clamped to the body-strips a the leaves 12 may be freely turned 'over and manipulated and readily secured in place.
When writing a record upon the note-book, the body portion is laid flat upon the table in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When it is desired to read the record from the notebook, the band f is drawn through the opening h, bringing the body-strips ct in the relatii e positions shown in Fig. 3, when the holder may be placed in an upright position upon the table, the two strips a forming a V-shaped support for the note-book.
The spring-clip j will prevent the strip from passing backwardly through the opening, though it may be raised to allow such passage when desired.
It is evident that many changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts of my device without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described book-holder, comprising a foldable body portion consisting of two members, each consisting of a smooth unbroken strip and flexibly connected at their edge portions, and provided with devices for clamping a book, one of said members being provided with an opening adjacent its outer end portion, and the other with a flexible strip adapted to operate Within said opening, and a grip device arranged adjacent said opening and adapted to automatically operate in connection with said flexible strip, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the class described, two members flexibly connected at their edge portions, each being provided with devices of varying tensional power for clamping the covers of a book, and for clamping the leaves of a book to said covers and devices for regulating the angular relation of said members, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device of the class described, two members flexibly connected at their edge portions, one of said members being provided adjacent its outer end with an opening and with an automatic grip device adjacent said opening, a button and a flexible strip secured to the other member, said strip operating within said opening, and in connection with said grip, and adapted to engage said button when said members are folded together, to retain them in such position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 12th day of April, 1899.
ED WIN BERTRAM PIKE.
