JACKET FOR PRINTERS ROLLERS.
:(Application med Apr. 5, 1899.}

aww/wltoz UNITED V STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD L. PERRY, OFPATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
.JAC KET FOR PRINTERS ROLLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,1 52, dated September 19, 1899.
' Application filed A ri15, 1899. Eerial No.7l1,825. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composite Jackets for Printers Inking-Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification,'and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of the present invention is to provide means whereby the ordinary printers inking-roller that becomes worn out and useless may be renewed by utilizing the old roller as a body and giving to the same a new inking-surface.
The invention therefore consists in providing a jacket comprising a composite hollow cylinder of solid elastic material adapted to slip over and fit the old body of the inkingroller and held thereon by its own inherent elastic qualities, whereby a new inking-surface is provided that will possess all the necessary requirements of a perfect inking-roller.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of an inking-roller embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a cross-section thereof on an enlarged scale, Fig. 3, a detail perspective view showing a portion of the elastic composite jacket.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the elastic jacket, and B the ordinary printers inking-roller which forms the body to the jacket when said jacket is fitted over the same. The roller B is of the usual composition from which printers inking-rollers are formed, such as glue and molasses or other composition. The jacket A is of an elastic materialand composed, preferably, of
crude india-rubber, twenty-eight parts; whiting, fifty-nine parts; dry lead, eleven parts; sulfur, two parts, and add to this from twenty-one to forty-two parts of corn-oil, which compound is formed and molded into the desired shape and subjected to either a steam or dry heat of the required degree until properly vulcanized.
I do not desire to limit myself to the compositionabove described, as any composition that will give to the jacket the required elasticity to hold itself upon the roller and possess the required surface to take up and distribute the ink perfectly will serve the purpose intended.
It is the main purpose of this invention to provide an article complete in itself that can be placed upon the market within the reach of printers and others requiring the same whereby the old and worn-out rollers that have been cast aside can be utilized by providing the same with an entirely new inkingsurface, this being attained by the composite elastic jacket A, which is slipped over the old inking-roller and the jacket held thereon by its own inherent elastic qualities.
Should the surface of the jacket become worn and useless, it may be removed and replaced by a new one, thereby using the old roller indefinitely as a body or core to the jacket.
The jacket, it should be understood, is
formed of solid elastic material in contradistinction to the old and ordinary covering of leather or rubberfaced cloth, and consequently holds itself in place upon the body of the roller by its own inherent elasticity without the necessity of additional fastenings.
These composite jackets may be made of various lengths and of any desired diameter and thickness to adapt them to any size inking-roller, or the surface of the old and wornout roller may be first trimmed in a lathe to adapt the roller to the diameter of the jacket.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, a composite jacket for renewing the surface of printers inking-rollers, said jacketconsisting of a hollow cylinder of solid elastic material, where by the same may be held in place upon the roller by its own inherent elasticity, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
, EDWVARD L. PERRY.
