To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that l, GUsTAvE SELowsKY, of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Extension or Emergency Band for Neckties, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. i

The object of my invention is to so construct the tip of the collar-band of a necktie that the entire tip may be utilized for engage ment with the fastening-pin of the tie and such connection be effected as conveniently and perfectly between the tip of the band and the tie as at any point between the tip and attached end of the band.

A further object of the invention is to provide a necktie-band that may be made shorter than usual, thereby economizing in material, and which, nevertheless, may be conveniently and accurately attached to a greater range of sizes of collars than ordinarily.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Figure 1 is a rear view of a necktie, illustrating the improved tip applied to the band; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the improved tie.

The tie Ais of that style in which a pin lO is employed to secure the free end portion of the band 12 to the head of the tie, the band 12 being secured to the head of the tie at one end in the usual manner and the tip end of the tie being adapted to be carried through the passage 13 at the back of the tie adjacent to which the pin 10 is located.

The tip B consists of two members or sections, a pliable section 15 and a stiffer or less pliable section lll, the pliable section 15 being opposite the inner face of the stiffer section let. The section 14 is constructed by introducing a strip 16 of metal or a like material between the opposing faces of the band 12, as shown in Fig. 2. The pliable section 15 is made of fabric, either elastic or non-elastic,

and one end 17 of the pliable section of said member 15 is secured to the inner face of the neckband 12 at or near the inner end of the strip 16 of the stiff section 14, while the other end 17a of the elastic section 15 is attached to the outer end portion of the stiff section 14. Preferably the pliable section 15 is made of such length that it may drop below one end of the stiff section 14. Thus the two sections 14; and 15 constitute practically a loop-tip. The elastic or pliable section 15 is adapted to be engaged by the pin lO.

In operation the pliable section 15 is drawn upward, so that it will lie close to the stiff section li, and when the parts are in this position the ti p is carried through the passage 13 in the head of the tie in the usual way, and if the collar to which the tie is applied be of such size that the pin cannot be made to enter at a point beyond the inner end of the stiff section 14E the said stiff section is per-v mitted to remain partiallyin the passage 13, and the pliable section is drawn downward, as shown in Fig. 1. The pin is then made to enter said pliable section. Thus it will be observed that the entire length of the tip may be utilized in fastening a tie in place and that the band may consequently be made much shorter than even what is known as medium bands, and ,that the band may be attached to collars of large sizes as conveniently and as expeditiously as to collars of small sizes.

lt will be understood that along loop need not necessarily be formed at the tip and that the pliable section of the tip need only have suflicient fullness and freedom between its ends to enable it to readily receive the fastening-pin of the tie. For example, if the pliable section be made of elastic material it may be laid flat to the stiff section of the tip, since the character of the pliable section would then admit of its being separated from the stiff section sufficiently to effect an engagement between the fastening-pin and the pliable section.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A tip for necktie-bands, comprising two sections, one stiff and the other pliable, the sections being secured together at their ter- IOO the combined sections forming a loopland 1o the pliable section being of sueient length to permit the loop to drop below the lower end of the stiffer section, for the purpose stated.
