Beit known that I, ERNsT H. HUENEFELD, a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in stoves, and more particularly to the stove covered by United States Patent No. 562,830, granted Huncilman and Barbee J une 30, 1896. In the patent referred to the draft pipe or flue is mounted on a box hinged to the stove. Hence in order to remove the ashes or kindle or start the fire it is necessary to turn the box, with the fine thereon, to one side, thus exposing the opening in the stove in rear of the box. The weight of the parts resting on the box-hinges wear the parts, and thus ren der a complete or practically air-tight closure of the box at this point practicallyimpossible.

The object of my invention is to provide means for securing access to the interior of the stove without turning the box or the draft flue or pipe thereon; and it consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully7 described, and pointed out in the claims.

A represents the body of the stove, which may, if desired, be provided with a suitable lining of sheet or cast iron. The stove will be provided at the top with an opening` u. for the insertion of fuel and with an opening b in the top or side near the top for the attachment of a stovepipe. The opening ct is covered by a swinging or removable hood B.

The stove is designed to contain a bed of ashes on which the iire is built and on which it burns, and preferably in a plane with or slightly above the surface of the bed of ashes is the bottom of the draft-opening d. Secured to the stove within or around this draft-opening is the draft-box C. This box is rigidly secured to the stove by screws or rivets and is provided on :its upperface with an opening f, surrounded by a collar or ange f', on which is mounted and to which is riveted or otherwise secured, if desired, the draft flue or pipe D. This iiue or pipe is preferably cylindrical in shape and extends approximately from the plane of the top of the stove to the top of the draft-box C andis provided at its tcp or below its top with a damper E. Vhen the damper, which may be of any approved form, is located below the top of the pipe the top should be closed. The outer face of the draft-box C is inclined upwardly and outwardly and is open to form the frame for the door F. This door is preferably hinged at one edge, Fig. l, or at its bottom, Fig. 4, or top, Fig. 3, so as to swing outwardly, and when closed is so shaped and fitted as to be practically air-tight, thus excluding all air from the stove except that which enters through the damper at the top of the draft flue or pipe.

By opening the door free access to the interior of the body of the stove may be had for startin g the fire and removing the ashes.

In Figs. 2 and 2 I have shown the box comprising a top II, rigid witha frame II', secured to the stove-body, and the ends, bottom, and outer sides of the box are made integral and hinged to the frame H or top I-I, so as to swing outwardly, upwardly, or downwardly.

Vith these constructions it will be seen that the weight of the draft iiue or pipe is borne by a box rigidly secured to the stovebody instead of to a box hinged to the stove, and the draft-iue being xed and immovable is not subject to strains and is not liable to be detached, as is the case with a swinging draft-hue.- Again, access is had to the interior through a doorand that without moving the draft-pipe, thus enabling me to have practically air-tight connection between the draft-flue and stove-body.

I make no claim in this application to a stove of the character wherein the draft pipe or flue is mounted on a box hinged to the stove, so that entrance to the stove is effected at the base of the draft pipe or flue by swinging or turning said box on its hinges, as my invention is confined to a draft pipe or flue fixed to an immovable part of the box, the box having a door which may be opened without disturbing the draft flue or pipe.

It is evident that numerous slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the several parts herein shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details herein shown and described, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a stove the combination with a body portion having an opening at its upper end and a cover for said opening, of a draft flue or box having an inclined outer face whereby to deflect air into said body and rigidly secured to the said body and in open communication therewith, a draft pipe or flue leading to the draft-box, and a movable door closing the said draft-'box at its inclined face, substantially as set forth.

2. In a stove, the combination with a body portion having a fuel-opening through its top and a cover for said opening, of a draftbox rigidly secured to the body and provided with an inclined outer face adapted to deliect air into said body, an opening in said inclined face, a draft flue or pipe secured on said box and having a damperai its upper end, and a hinged door forclosing the opening in the inclined face of said draft-box, substantially as set forth.
